Q & A with Edison High School Principal Carlos Hamlin

Principal Hamlin is the fourth of a four-part series profiling Wheaton area High School principals.

As another school year is upon us, Patch sat down with four Wheaton-area High School principals to find out what they did on their summer vacation and their outlook on the 2011-2012 school year.

Patch: What was the most fun thing you did on your summer vacation?

Principal Carlos Hamlin: I had a chance to spend time with my high school football coach from Coolidge – boating, fishing and just having a great time on the water.

Patch: What is the most challenging thing about the start of a new school year?

C.H: I have been doing this for 27 years, so there is really nothing that is too challenging any more. It is still very exciting though – a new crop of students coming in with the excitement of stating career their pathway. The whole atmosphere when they start is still exciting to me. For the students, though making the adjustment from being in a school all day to having to catch a bus, and sharing the day between two schools has its challenges.

Patch: How do you see the County budget cuts affecting Edison High School?

C.H: It’s something that all of us have to work with, and Edison is not immune. We’ve lost some staff, close one program and combine two others. We’re weathering the storm, and still providing very rigorous programs for our students

Patch: What single event are you most looking forward to during the 2011-2012 school year?

C.H:  That has to be the Board of Education’s vote on whether Wheaton and Edison will be two separate buildings or one. The Superintendent’s recommendation is to have two separate schools on this campus – a brand new Wheaton and a brand new Edison.

Patch: Please share one new thing about your school for this year – a new hire, new program or new piece of equipment.

C.H: We don’t have anything new, except for another great bunch of students. I say it every year, but I mean it every year – I’m really looking forward to working with them and their parents towards a promising future.
