Wheaton Students Take Charge at Cafe, Coffeehouse

Education in Wheaton doesn't just mean test scores and the three R's (writing, reading and arithmetic.)
This week, The Washington Post profiled Cava Java, a coffeehouse inside John F. Kennedy High School run by special education students. The coffeehouse started in 2004 and earns enough money to pay its own costs.
Do you like donuts? Cava Java sells 10-12 dozen a week in a second-floor faculty lounge, The Washington Post reported.

In 2011, the Montgomery County Council of PTAs honored Cava Java as a program that supported special education students, Patch reported.
And over at Thomas Edison High School of Technology, three of the school's vocational programs collaborate to operate Café Edison, The Gazette reported. Students get experience preparing food, running a restaurant, designing menus and more.
