Thea LaFond Signs Letter of Intent to Maryland

State Champion in two events, LaFond will attend University of Maryland, College Park

made her college choice official yesterday afternoon by signing a letter of intent to attend the University of Maryland.

Taking a day off between and beginning training for Nationals, LaFond said that she chose University of Maryland for academics, as well as the coaching staff there.

"When it came to Maryland I felt comfortable, respected," LaFond said, adding that the coaches there could help her prepare for her goal of participating in the 2016 Olympics.

LaFond's father, Dorian, said they had visited schools up and down the East coast, as well as had teleconferences with some midwestern schools. Ultimately, they decided to "come back home" to Maryland. 

"She's aware about the importance of both athletics and academics," Dorian LaFond said, "We want to make sure she focuses on a life after athletics."
