GETTING THE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO SAY SOMETHING

An easy way to ask the Board of Education to speak out.

This is about getting the BoE to do their job.  They are supposed to be in charge of our public school system and to function as an independent body of officials elected to watch over our schools - and the kids who attend them.

Some time ago I offered Public Comment before the BoE (as I have done several times over the years).  Speaking as an individual, I asked them to take SOME position on the question of health risk posed to kids attending Stephen Knolls School.  (http://www.educationalassistance.org/SpeakingOut/PublicComment/BoE12Feb2...)

They still have not.  They could say that those of us who are talking about this health risk don't know what we are talking about. Or that we are wrong.  Or that there is not enough information available.  Or that they are concerned but don't feel qualified to comment.

But they have not said anything.

Some people are concerned about this.  In fact some people are concerned about a lot of things the BoE has/has not done.  The question has been raised as to whether we should even HAVE a local BoE.

A few parents have asked me what they could do.  I urged them to contact the BoE.  They said they didn't have time, or wouldn't be listened to, or ...

It seems to me we have an obligation to tell our elected officials when we think they aren't doing their job.  We should not simply elect them, watch, and "boot them out" if they didn't do their jobs.  We should give them feedback.  They of course are free to ignore such feedback.

To make it easier for people to tell the BoE to say something about the health risk issue, I've posted a "prepared" Email on our website.  If you go to www.stopcostcogas.org, click on TAKE ACTION, and scroll down to the Send An Email section, you will find a link to send an Email to the BoE.  If you like it and send it, it is in essence a petition.

If you like the idea, but not my words, you can change it and send what you want to say.  Or you can ignore this option.  But doesn't the democratic process involve speaking out?
