Think Twice About Backyard Fireworks

If you're thinking of skipping the area's municipal fireworks altogether for a show of your own in the backyard, think twice.

All backyard fireworks are still illegal in Montgomery County -- including sparklers -- and the penalty for owning them comes with a hefty fine. Violations of the fireworks ban may include a fine up to $1,000 and six months in jail, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services.

“The law in Montgomery County is clear and the safest, and smartest, way to enjoy fireworks is to enjoy one of the many public displays in the area,” said Montgomery County Fire Chief Richard Bowers.

MCFRS participated in a Council of Governments fireworks safety demonstration on June 21, releasing the following safety tips for those who live in jurisdictions where fireworks are legal:

• Always read all warnings and instructions.
• Only approved fireworks may be discharged.
• Do not permit young children to handle or light fireworks. Sparklers can reach a temperature of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. 
• Prior to igniting fireworks, place them on a flat surface, clear of any combustible material and clear of all buildings.
• Never ignite fireworks while holding them.
• Keep a bucket of water or a hose handy in case of a malfunction or fire.
• Never try to relight fireworks that have not functioned properly.
• The safest way to prevent fireworks-related injuries is to leave the fireworks displays to the professionals.
