Report: Metro Ordering 85 Hybrid Buses

The diesel-electric hybrid vehicles will be more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly.

By Whitney Teal

Cleaner air may be ahead for the drivers and pedestrians often left in the wake of exhaust emitted by Metro buses. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has ordered 85 diesel-electric vehicles to be delivered within a year, Next-Gen Transportation News reports.

The new buses are 42-feet long and will emit 80 percent less particulate matter, 96 percent fewer nitrogen oxides and will be 20 percent more fuel-efficient, the website reported. WMATA has the option to order up to 498 additional buses of the same variety over the next five years.
