Officials want to brand the county as a place to live and play for all ages.
Relaxing liquor laws, later last calls for bars and restaurants and more nightlife businesses around Metro stations are just some of the solutions a Montgomery County task force is considering to pump up the county's nighttime economy. Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) addressed the 20-member group at its first meeting Monday in Silver Spring, Bethesda Now reported. While most people like the idea of improving the county's nighttime economy, they might not like what it means, Leggett said. A 50-year-old man fell under the bus as it was pulling away from a bus stop on Georgia Avenue, according to police.
A Brookville man died in the hospital Thursday morning after being struck by a Metro bus on Wednesday night. Ronald Maurice Johnson, 50, who had fallen under the bus on southbound Georgia Avenue, was taken to Suburban Hospital with what seemed to be non-life-threatening injuries, Montgomery County Police said. However, Johnson's condition worsened overnight and he was pronounced dead at 5:55 a.m. Thursday, police said. The bus was pulling away from a bus stop on southbound Georgia Avenue when Johnson fell under the bus, according to police accounts. Police officers and fire and rescue personnel responded at approximately 11:08 p.m. to the area just south of the intersection with Olney-Sandy Spring Road, according to a news release. The …

One man died and another was severely injured in the collapse of a portion of a parking garage under construction at the Westfield Montgomery mall Thursday afternoon, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service officials said. The 50,000- to 55,000-pound slab collapsed on a ramp between the second and third levels of the garage near the Macy's department store, said Assistant Chief Scott Graham, a fire and rescue spokesman. The survivor was trapped for four hours before rescuers could free him, Graham said. He was flown by helicopter to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. County officials are holding two public meetings in June to get community input on plans for the new Wheaton Library and Recreation Center. The county has chosen Grimm + Parker Architects to design what will be the county's first combined facility for a library and recreation center. The first meeting will take place on June 5 from 7-9 p.m. at the Wheaton Library in Meeting Room 100. According to a notice from the county, this meeting will be "a workshop where all in attendance will be discussing their visions, goals, challenges and concerns for the new building and its site."
