The sad thing is that MCPS doesn't allow a transfer away from a home school for things like "we…Read More don't like the principal". So the students that are not already able to go to a private school are by and large stuck. Transfer where? Transfer how? It is a frustrating position for parents to be in.

I think if I were a fifth grader, I'd be feeling really jealous. These kids get a new school, and…Read More they're not going to get to enjoy it.

I support this student's ability to remain seated and not participate in the Pledge of Allegiance.…Read More I see many problems with the Pledge of Allegiance, and it's not even related to any one political movement or idea as in this case. Mine are more fundamental, relating to the profession of religious faith, and the sense that the Pledge is essentially idol worship. On the first point, this refers to the "under God" segment that was added in the 1950s. On the second point, why are we pledging allegiance to the flag above country? The allegiance of the citizenry should be aimed directly at the country, and the flag is a symbol of said country. The country is far more than its flag, and the flag is never greater than the entity that it stands for.
So yes - sitting is perfectly fine in my book, as that is complete non-participation.

Freedom of speech is the reason that you can make such unsubstantiated and frankly ignorant…Read More statements. Freedom of speech is also the reason that anyone in this Country, including Puerto Rico, can choose to abstain from pledging their allegiance. Puerto Rico is not a third world country. Most Puerto Ricans leave Puerto Rico to go live with family members in other states just as you may find a Texan in New York. They do not require passports or anything to do so, as Puerto Rico is part of the United States. Disagreeing with a policy of the United States does not mean that you are disrespecting the USA or it's traditions. If that were the case then you should also go back to Germany, England, Africa, or whatever country your family originally came from for disagreeing with our democratically elected President and his political Party. I am not pro or con ACLU, but I know my rights as an American Born Citizen. This student, as a citizen, has that right to pledge or not pledge. That's the beauty of our country.
