Yes, Wednesdays can be a challenge. Need some inspiration from those who "climbed a mountain?"
Are Wednesdays really so tough? Well, yes, they can be. Here, though, is to keeping things in perspective. For more than a month now, Patch and Grape-Nuts have teamed up to present stories about your neighbors - neighbors who have faced challenges that would seem insurmountable to many of us. But not to the people we've featured in this series, Journeys. Not surprisingly, the stories have generated dozens of comments on Patch and on Facebook: "Great story..." "Thanks for sharing..." "So wonderfully inspiring..." And, so, here they are again. Great stories shared to inspire. Take a look at what these people have faced. Then click on the story to see their responses. And feel better about your tough Wednesday. Enterprising Dad Juggles …

Data from 2009 reveals that students have long struggled with final exams in MCPS math courses.
Few Montgomery County Public Schools students enrolled in high school math courses made high marks on final exams last semester, data released by the school district last week showed. In one class, Bridge to Algebra 2, less than 1 percent made an "A" on the final exam. (See data, above, that details the distribution of final exam grades "A" through "E" for eight math courses last semester.) School officials were prompted to release student math grades after members of the county school board grilled Superintendent Joshua Starr about last semester's final exam grades. Media outlets reported earlier this month that the majority of students in high school math—Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry and Precalculus—failed their final exams. Starr …
My son with autism is competing in a Geo Bowl at his school next week. I am beyond worried about how he is going to be able to navigate this unfamiliar situation—and what the fallout with the typical kids will be if it goes badly.
A little more than a week ago, I got an email from a parent at my son Jack's school. It started out with this happy greeting: "Great news! Your child was a top performer in the Geo Bowl quiz and has thus been selected to be on the 4th grade Geography Bowl team." Naturally, I panicked immediately. I am, of course, beyond proud of my son for qualifying to be on a Geo Bowl team. I will show up on Geo Bowl day and cheer on his team as they compete against the other fourth grade teams in this quiz show-style competition. No matter how it goes down, I will be so proud of him. That said, I can't imagine a situation more fraught with landmines. I am terrified of how this could go down. See, Jack is my son with autism. He is incredibly smart and …

At the second annual Conference on Combatting Human Trafficking, the governor noted inter-agency cooperation was key to success.
New state-wide outreach programs have helped more than 15 child victims of human trafficking in the past five months alone, according to the governor’s office. Last year, nearly 80 victims received services from the state. Those numbers were some of the highlights of Monday's Second Annual Conference on Combating Human Trafficking in Maryland, in which more than 400 stakeholders and representatives of local, state and national organizations got together to discuss efforts to battle this crime, which is alive in Maryland. “Working together with all of our partners in law enforcement, we’ve assembled quite a collection of public servants and leaders in the fight against human trafficking,” Gov. Martin O'Malley said in a statement. Public …

Delaney: 'Doug Duncan’s record speaks for itself and his values and expertise are well-known around our county.'
U.S. Rep. John Delaney on Saturday endorsed Douglas M. Duncan at the former Montgomery County Executive's first major campaign event in his bid to regain his old job. “Doug Duncan’s record speaks for itself and his values and expertise are well-known around our county,” Delaney (D-Dist. 6) of Potomac said in a statement released by Duncan’s campaign. “I know Doug has the long term vision to make our county a great place to work, live, start a business, raise a family, and he has a plan to make Montgomery work.” Duncan, a Democrat, served three terms as county executive from 1994 to 2006. In 2006, he sought the Democratic nomination for governor, before dropping out of the race, citing depression. After a hiatus, Duncan has decided to re-…
A Montgomery County councilman pitches a plan as Pepco customers sound off.
Last year's derecho storm was the latest to highlight issues with Pepco reliability and communication. Last week, Montgomery County Councilman Roger Berliner proposed a "Utility 2.0" plan to improve electricity service. Patch users had something to say about Pepco getting a rate increase to pay for reliability improvements: - Michael Smith said: "Why should Pepco increase it's rates AT ALL to pay for infrastructure? Each year they make over $100 MILLION dollars in pure profit and invest ZERO of it into the community." - Arlene K. Polangin said: "Pepco needs to improve service BEFORE it gets a rate increase. Why should customers pay for poor service with a higher bill? The DERECHO = 6 days NO electricity and every little outage = no power …
