I agree that both pedestrians and drivers should be targeted. It concerns me that if pedestrians…Read More are no longer the focus, infractions by those on foot won't be noted.
We saw a flagrant action we had never seen before just a month ago on Veirs Mill by the Wheaton metro. We had just taken the Veirs Mill fork off Georgia Ave. when the SUV ahead of us and to our left stopped at the green light at the Metro bus lot. We saw someone on the median with his/her hand raised trying to stop the cars. We stopped, of course, green light or not, and were amazed to see 4 young men walk across! No emergency, not even a problem! They just wanted to cross on a red light.
That's the kind of thing the police don't see because the youths wouldn't have done it with the police around. But it means the police really have to concentrate on everything. It's a tough assignment, but had we not seen that hand poking above the top of the SUV, it could have been a disaster for the youths and life-altering for us as well.

As a pedestrian we need to be much more vigilant because we already know that aggressive driving is…Read More a real problem everywhere, and instead of just complaining about some of the less careful drivers we need to be more active in ensuring own safety and play a role in making the situation better and safer for everyone. I see the ability to live right by the metro as a luxury and I purposely chose the area because of the ability to walk most places, and to metro to work. However, I see some very scary actions on Georgia Avenue such as individuals darting across the street at night against oncoming traffic and nowhere near crosswalks. This really angers me because if this individual was to cause an accident the driver will be blamed when it was clearly the pedestrians fault. Bottom line is, no, a pedestrian does NOT always have the right of way, and as a pedestrian I am actually sick of people acting like they own the road just because they ARE walking. Cross at a crosswalk; wait for a light to change and/or a walk sign, and stop acting foolish and setting a bad precedent for others who will literally follow suit, such as your children.

The intersection of Georgia and Spring is a good example of a miserable crossing area. The walk…Read More lights come on as traffic in the turn lanes gets the green light so they're turning right into pedestrians entering the crosswalk. The actual walk signals are not long enough to get across 4 lanes of traffic.
I think that both drivers and pedestrians should be targeted. I can't tell you how many times I've watched people jaywalk across 2nd Street (Wayne Ave) right in front of the Courthouse, with police officers right there waiting to go to Court. It's shameful and indicative of how little pedestrians respect traffic rules.

Meh, better traffic for everyone else, given that many companies (contractor and non-govt related)…Read More follow govt. schedules. People who telework are still, you know, expected to work.

If tele-work is so productive why did Yahoo stop the practice. This was wasted time = tax dollars.

I agree with your comment above that old cars that can't go so fast improved safety. I'd prefer to use slower cars and then take trains/planes for long distances.
Pedestrians have as much of a right to use the street space as cars, and there are no laws against jaywalking in Maryland. Oftentimes the distance is far in between crosswalks and people in cars don't even yield for people walking when they use crosswalks to cross.
