A 52-year-old Germantown man was arrested for 10 commercial robberies and two street robberies in Montgomery County.
A Germantown man suspected of 10 commercial robberies and two street robberies in Montgomery County — including five in the Wheaton and Glenmont areas — was arrested during a traffic stop in Gaithersburg Feb. 17, Montgomery County police announced Wednesday. Duane James, 52, of the 18600 block of Mustard Seed Court, was charged with two counts of armed robbery, having a handgun in a vehicle and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, police said. After his arrest, James was charged with nine additional armed robbery charges and three first-degree assault charges. Update, 2:15 p.m. Montgomery County police are searching for the men who robbed a Verizon store at gunpoint in Aspen Hill Tuesday. According to police, two men entered the store as it was closing, forced the two employees to the back of the store and tied them up. Police officers arrived on the scene at 2221 Bel Pre Road at 8:07 p.m., after the robbers had fled with stolen phones. According to a police statement, both suspects are described as approximately 5-foot-11. One weighed approximately 160-165 pounds, the other approximately 175 pounds. Police found the alleged robber less than 10 minutes after receiving the report of the crime.

Montgomery County police caught up with an 18-year-old from Laurel less than 10 minutes after he was suspected of robbing a Wheaton convenience store at gunpoint Friday afternoon. Montgomery County police arrested a Silver Spring man they allege is responsible for three armed robberies—the hold-ups of a convenience store and a bank yesterday in Wheaton, and an attempted robbery of a Silver Spring bank on Jan. 23. Police allege that Joseph Urrutia, 47, is the person responsible in all three robberies, according to a police statement released on Tuesday. Urrutia, of the 900 block of Benson Terrace in Silver Spring, was charged with three counts of armed robbery and is being held on a $125,000 bond. Police say an employee buzzed a man past security only to be robbed when the man pulled out a gun.
Montgomery County police are searching for a suspect in the Jan. 21 armed robbery of The Gold Spot, located at 11935 Georgia Avenue in Glenmont. At approximately 12:45 p.m., the suspect arrived at the business and pulled on the front door attempting to gain entry, police said in a statement. The business has controlled access, so when the suspect was seen at the door, the employee allowed him entry into the store. Once inside, the suspect pulled down a mask to cover his face, produced a handgun from his waistband and announced the robbery. The suspect demanded the employee move to the rear of the store and was able to obtain an undisclosed amount of cash and gold jewelry before fleeing the scene.
