Blazers and Cavaliers thrive while Knights and Gladiators struggle.
Two-thirds of the high school girls' basketball regular season are behind us, and the standings have started to shaped up in clearer fashion than earlier in the year. Blair, 10-4, 3-3 Montgomery 4A East, 3rd place The Blazers have played consistently strong basketball this year, but the 4A East is incredibly strong. Johanna Lopez and Myla Sapp pace their offense, but they may need a viable third option to really compete with the best in the division over the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs. Kennedy, 8-6, 5-1 Montgomery 3A/2A East, 2nd place Kennedy's overall record is mediocre, but their dominance in 3A/2A play has been remarkable. Next week's matchup with Blake will likely be a battle for first place. Northwood, 3-8, 3-3…

Blair beat Northwood by 30 on Friday.
Friday night’s game between the Northwood Gladiators (2-8) and the Montgomery Blair Blazers (10-3) featured two schools who share the same street outside, but whose teams are headed in opposite directions. The Blazers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, taking the game by a final score of 74-44. Blair opened the game on a 17-2 run, led by juniors Johanna Lopez (17 points) and Myla Sapp (18 points) as well as the inside presence of Rose Kalala, who scored eight. Northwood finally stopped Blair’s run with a basket with 1:35 remaining in the first quarter. The Gladiators managed offense of their own in the second period, thanks to the accurate three-point shooting of junior Monique Harris, who finished with 16 points, including…

Kennedy and Wheaton have been winners thus far, while Blair and Northwood are still trying to find the missing links.
High school basketball seasons in Montgomery County are nearing their halfway point. Most teams play 22 to 24-game regular-season schedules, depending on tournament play, and as of Jan. 6, teams in and around Silver Spring have played nine games apiece. At this juncture of the season, it is perhaps still too early to make any grand conclusions about where teams may stack up come late February. However, some trends have become clear in the early going, which may strongly suggest the trajectory of these teams. Blair, 3-6 The Blazers have struggled to score so far this season, averaging just 42.7 points per game as a team, which has landed them at the bottom of the Montgomery 4A East standings. Since the return of senior forward Charles …

Wheaton controlled the game against Blair on Monday, beating them 49-30.
Six games into the season, Blair boys basketball coach Mark Destefano is at a loss. His team, which on paper shows depth at multiple positions, is just 2-4, and seems to have been swallowed deep into a rut with but a glimpse of light visible overhead. Monday's 49-30 loss to Wheaton did not help the situation at all. "It was as poor of an effort on the offensive end that I can remember having to sit trhough and watch," Said Destefano, who has coached for 17 years. "I don't understand why we can't do the things other high school teams do. I am, at this point of the season, perplexed, and that's putting it mildly." The Blazers' struggles are almost entirely offensive. They have proven unable to control their turnovers or shoot close to a …

The Blazers beat the Cavaliers on the final shot on Friday.
The people who attended Friday's girls' basketball matchup between the Montgomery Blair Blazers and Kennedy Cavaliers will be talking about it all weekend. The contest featured two teams looking to make a statement early this basketball season. The Blazers (2-0) outscored the Cavaliers (0-2) in the first quarter, 12-7, led by junior guard Myla Sapp's inside presence and senior forward Sarah McMillan's rebounding. Blair's trapping defense held Kennedy at bay throughout the period. In the second quarter, Kennedy surged back behind the hot shooting of junior guard Desha Nowrn, who scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half, and helped even the score at 17-17 with 1:23 left in the half. The Blazers led 21-17 at halftime. Bolstered by an 8-0…
