Full Council Unofficially Supports Wheaton Library, Recreation Center

The Montgomery County Council supported advancing the renovation project construction by three years.

With a unanimous recommendation from two Montgomery County Council committees, the full council voted unofficially on Tuesday to expedite funding for the Wheaton Library and Recreation Center renovation project in the CIP. At a March 5 worksession, the Health and Human Services and the Planning, Housing, and Economic Development committees both recommended funding $2.43 million for FY13, $3.062 million for FY14, and $30.3 million for FY15. This funding schedule moves construction from FY18 to FY15--a three-year advance on County Executive Isiah Leggett's recommendations. Although the council deferred its originally scheduled discussion of Wheaton Redevelopment, the program remained part of the conversational backdrop. Council Vice …

Council Committees Vote to Advance Wheaton Library Construction to 2014

Five councilmembers showed their support by voting to advance construction on the Wheaton Library and Recreation Center complex by three years in the county CIP budget.

Two Montgomery County Council committees voted Monday to advance the Wheaton Library and Recreation Center renovation project in the county’s six-year CIP budget. Instead of beginning construction in fiscal year 2018 as recommended by the county executive, the committees unanimously voted to move construction funds to fiscal year 2015. At their March 5 joint meeting, the Planning, Housing, and Economic Development and the Housing and Human Services committees also voted to advance planning and design funding to FY13 and FY14, as proposed by Council Vice President Nancy Navarro. This decision represents a two-year adjustment of County Executive Isiah Leggett’s Capital Improvement Program recommendations, which allotted design and planning…

Council Calendar: Late February to Mid-March

The Montgomery County Council's Planning, Housing and Economic Development committee will discuss Wheaton redevelopment on March 12.

Correction: The PHED committee will not discuss Wheaton Redevelopment on Feb. 27. This discussion will tentatively take place March 12, at 2 p.m. With the CIP budget under consideration by the Montgomery County Council, and everything from the Wheaton Redevelopment to the library/recreation center complex up for discussion, we know that dates can get confusing very quickly. The county council calendar can shift unexpectedly, so none of these dates are set in stone, but we will do our best to update the list when changes occur. Here’s a rundown of Wheaton-related council action items for the next three weeks: Meetings that are televised live are available streaming at http://montgomerycountymd.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?publish_id=4 Did …

Thanks for your comments, Kathy. This morning, I confirmed with Councilmember Nancy Floreen's office that the PHED committee, which Floreen chairs, will be discussing Wheaton Redevelopment on March 12, NOT on Feb. 29, as erroneously stated in the committee packet. Of course, March 12 is a tentative date, but if anything changes, I'll update this article.   more ›

Meeting Round-Up: Mid-County Citizens Advisory Board

Councilmember Nancy Floreen dismissed MCCAB concerns that Wheaton Redevelopment is competing with the Purple Line in the county CIP budget.

At their Feb. 21 meeting, members of the Mid-County Citizens Advisory Board discussed Wheaton Redevelopment and the relocation of Fire Station 18 in Glenmont. Here are some highlights from the meeting: Fire Station 18 Khalid Afzal, the chief planner for the Wheaton Sector Plan, spoke to MCCAB about why the Montgomery County Planning Board has disapproved the county’s application to build a fire station on the WMATA Triangle in Glenmont. This fire station would replace Fire Station 18, currently located at the corner of Georgia Avenue and Randolph Road. The Planning Board objects to the design proposed by the Department of General Services because of traffic circulation concerns, according to a Jan. 4 memo. The county submitted the …
