Toys for Tots: Where to Donate in Montgomery County

A handy guide to donating toys this holiday season.

In 1947, Diane Hendricks made a doll and asked her husband, Maj. Bill Hendricks, US Marine Corps Reserve, to find a local charity in the Los Angeles area that would give it to a needy child. When he was unable to locate one, she suggested that he start one. That year, Maj. Hendricks teamed with other Marine reservists, collecting and distributing 5,000 toys to children that year. In 1948, the Marine Corps adopted the Toys for Tots program and it has been running steadily since, with the help of celebrities such as Bob Hope, Kenny Rodgers and First Lady Michelle Obama. One little known fact – Walt Disney designed the organization’s logo. You can drop off toys at Toys and/or Babies R Us, or one of the locations listed below. You can also …

County, Nonprofit Needs Holiday Support for Silver Spring, Wheaton Families

A Wider Circle needs sponsorship for needy families in Silver Spring, Aspen Hill and Wheaton this Thanksgiving and holiday season.

Montgomery County families facing hard times and a rapidly approaching holiday season need help, organizers of nonprofit A Wider Circle told local news outlets.  The organization was chosen as the county's partner in the annual Holiday Giving Project, which pairs faith-based, nonprofit and government sponsors with people in need by zip code. This year, organizers told the Gazette newspaper that two zip codes in Silver Spring, one zip code in Wheaton and one zip code in Aspen Hill are still without a sponsor, a week before Thanksgiving. "Some families may not get the help in Silver Spring that they will get in Rockville or Gaithersburg," Mark Bergel, founder and executive director of A Wider Circle, told ABC7.  The zip codes without a …

DC Area Walmart Workers to Join Black Friday Strike

Employees of the retail giant hope to take advantage of one of the year's busiest shopping days.

Employees of DC-area Walmart and Sam's Club locations are joining a national strike effort this Black Friday to protest what they view as low wages, poor scheduling practices, and worker intimidation on the part of the retail giant. The campaign, organized by Making Change at Walmart and linked with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, is planning demonstrations outside dozens of stores nationwide on one of the busiest shopping days of the year. In the DC area, Nov. 23 protests are scheduled for Walmart and Sam's Club locations in Laurel, Hyattsville, Bowie, Gaithersburg, Woodlawn, Severn, Clinton, Abingdon, Alexandria, and Fairfax. (Both chains are owned by parent company Walmart Stores, Inc.) The strike action …

US management approach + US union approach sucks the life from business. Toyota and Hyundai -very successful, massively profitable companies- are both very heavily unionized. They aren't having the life sucked out of them by unions. They ate the US OEM's lunch for almost 30 years... with much better process control, and union workers. The too-early move into robotics was (yet another) knee-jerk …   more ›

SPEAK OUT: Do You Plan to Spend More Money this Holiday Season?

How will your finances affect your holiday spending?

Two-thirds of respondents to a recent poll by the NPD Group said they “plan to spend about the same” as last year, while 10 percent planned to “spend more.” With the economy and job situation still in flux for many families, we want to know what families in Montgomery County and Prince George’s County plan to do for Christmas, Hanukah, or Kwanzaa gifts in 2012. Will you be more creative with your gifting? Use sites like Groupon, Living Social, etc? Brave Black Friday sales? Cook or bake for familty and friends?

PHOTOS: Almost-Santa Sighting in Wheaton Mall

Santa's Holiday Parade is set up near Macy's.

On a quick trip to the Wheaton mall Tuesday, Patch noticed that the area near Macy's is all set up for Santa's visit. The mall has publicized that Santa's arrival was supposed to take place on Nov. 19, according to its calendar. But at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, we didn't see the jolly, fat man himself. Maybe we just missed him as he went on a coffee break. Anyway, it's that time of year — yes, we realize Thanksgiving is still on Thursday — so here are a few photos from "Santa's Holiday Parade" at the Wheaton mall to get you in the spirit of things.
