Safeway Dominates Wheaton Skyline

Find out when construction is expected to finish.

It's hard for anyone passing through Wheaton's downtown area to miss the massive structure rising from the ground at the corner of Reedie Drive and Georgia Avenue. When completed, the 17-story building will include a Safeway grocery store and apartments. The apartments above the Safeway will be completed by this fall, the report said. The new mixed-use facility will also include a SunTrust bank, Bergman’s drycleaner and a Starbucks, Patch reported in October. Wasn't Foulger-Pratt responsible for managing the Silver Spring Transit Center project as well? Has anyone double-checked on their work on this project? Some reassurance that similar mistakes in reading contract requirements haven't been made here. The last thing Wheaton needs is a giant unfinished building as a result of poor construction.   more ›

Part of Georgia Avenue in Wheaton Closed Sunday

A detour will divert drivers away from work at the Safeway construction site on Feb. 3.

If you are driving northbound along Georgia Avenue through Wheaton this Sunday, you may need to take a detour. The stretch of road between Reedie Drive and Price Avenue will be closed on Feb. 3 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Southbound Georgia Avenue will remain open. Through traffic approaching Wheaton along Georgia Avenue from the south will be directed to follow this detour route: Left turn on Veirs Mill Road, right turn on University Boulevard, left turn on Grandview Avenue, right turn on Blueridge Avenue and finally a left turn back onto Georgia Avenue. The road closure will allow workers to take down a crane at the Safeway construction project at the corner of Reedie Drive and Georgia Avenue, according to Joe Callaway, chief of operations for…

Reedie Drive Construction Should Finish By Christmas

Montgomery County's Department of Transportation aims to improve pedestrian safety with the streetscaping project.

Have you noticed all the construction work along Reedie Drive between Georgia Avenue and Veirs Mill Road in downtown Wheaton? Montgomery County's Department of Transportation is trying to improve pedestrian safety with concrete medians and islands and with marked crosswalks, according to a report from the Wheaton Redevelopment Program. Sidewalks on that stretch of road are also getting a new look. Joe Callaway, chief of operations for the Wheaton Urban District, wrote in an email to Patch that the streetscaping project began the second week of November and the construction phase should be completed by Christmas. Landscaping will most likely be delayed until the spring, he added.

Repairing Cracked ICC Bridges May Bring Road Closures

Crews will be repairing hairline cracks on bridges spanning the central portion of the Intercounty Connector.

Fissures in three bridges along the Intercounty Connector may cause temporary road closures between Norbeck Road and New Hampshire Avenue beginning this week, the State Highway Administration announced.  Patch reported that hairline cracks were found in 10 bridges along the toll road of more than 17 miles: SHA is currently working on fixing three: Longmead Crossing Drive, Layhill Road and Notley Road. Officials estimate construction should be complete this winter. Expect shoulder closures and temporary traffic signs, traffic barrels, cones, crash cushions and the concrete barriers used to designate the shoulder closures, SHA said. The bridges will stay open and the shoulder closures should cause “minimal impact” to drivers, the agency said…
