White Knuckle Parenting: Keep Your Kids Out of Costco

The new Costco is like a wonderland for my kids. Staunching the binge buying is going to take some effort.

Back when my kids were in diapers, my husband and I were Costco members and would head down to Beltsville every month or so to buy diapers, oranges, ground beef, and usually an impulse purchase or two. (Two dozen Sharpies in a rainbow of colors? Yes, please!) Side note: Have you noticed that everyone has an opinion on which is the best Costco? Side note to the side note: No one thinks it is the Beltsville location. Now that there is a Costco within walking distance of our house, we re-signed up under the premise that we could go there to buy just milk or just bread—or just 32 new acrylic drinking glasses. My husband is thrilled to be back in the land of bulk purchasing, but for my kids, who don't remember experiencing the joy of warehouse …

Ha! I know. I'm all responsible and don't let my kids eat 16 peanut butter cups in one day, but then I do. To protect them.   more ›

Wheaton Costco Gas Station Hearings Begin Friday

The first of eight hearings for Costco's special exception application for a 16-pump gas station in Wheaton takes place April 26.

The Wheaton Costco store opened April 10, but without a gas station. Hearings for Costco's special exception application for a 16-pump gas station on the Westfield Wheaton property begin Friday. The case will come before Martin Grossman, director of the Office of Zoning and Administrative Hearings; the final determination will be made by the Board of Appeals. The April 26 hearing is the first of eight. Subsequent dates are May 1, May 6, May 14, May 17, May 20, May 23 and June 4.  Each hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Stella B. Werner Council Office Building, Second Floor Davidson Memorial Hearing Room, at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The Montgomery County Planning Board has already weighed in, voting in opposition to Costco's gas …

Kosher Offerings at Wheaton Costco Cause for Celebration, Concern in Jewish Community

Kemp Mill shoppers said they were particularly excited about the dairy bakery items for sale.

The Costco that opened earlier this month at the Wheaton mall includes a kosher dairy bakery, something that Kemp Mill resident Phil Lehman worked for years to bring about. Lehman contacted 22 local synagogues in the area, asking members of the congregations to send letters of support, Washington Jewish Week reported in 2012. Rhonda Lehman, his daughter-in-law, who also lives in Kemp Mill, came to the pre-opening celebration at Costco on April 9. The kosher bakery "changes the way people are going to entertain," she said. Costco is a natural fit for the Jewish community because large families can buy in bulk, said Rabbi Yitzchak Hanoka of OK Kosher Certification, the organization that approves and monitors Costco's kosher selections at …

Why does the consumer have to sacrifice. We live in a free market where competition is key. If the kosher markets want to survive, they need to price competitively. I understand that producing kosher meat is more expensive than non kosher, but the difference at retail is outrageous. Kosher markets need to compromise. Maybe a new Mercedes every two years rather than every year.   more ›

Mayorga Coffee Opens After Costco at Wheaton Mall

The "Café Latino" model is a new one for the Rockville-based company.

The Mayorga Coffee that opened Wednesday across from the Costco in the Westfield Wheaton mall is far from a Starbucks look-alike. There's no seating, and you won't find lattes or cappuccinos on the menu. Instead of croissants or muffins, you can order empanadas, flan or Cuban pastries called pastelitos. "Some people might be shocked, but it's more in line with the coffee culture that we know," said Martin Mayorga, president and founder of Mayorga Coffee. What the Rockville-based chain is doing in Wheaton is a test model for a walk-up coffee and pastry shop, he said. He calls it "Mayorga Café Latino." "It's a big risk," Mayorga said, but he's confident that it will turn out well. The construction issues that delayed Costco's originally …

I love empanadas! I'll check it out today. Pollo Camparo, also in Wheaton, has some good ones, especially the citrus chicken. They're on Georgia Avenue between Blue Ridge Avenue and University Blvd, and are a Guatemalan chain. I don't know if they're "quality" or not, but they are tasty. And I like their fried chicken better than that at KFC.   more ›

Let the Shopping Begin! Wheaton Costco Opens

The membership warehouse store opened to a flood of customers at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Westfield Wheaton mall.

After a delay of almost six months, the Wheaton Costco is open for business. Pat Fahey, the warehouse store's general manager, cut the ribbon at the entrance at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, and a line of shoppers began streaming into the store, located in the old Hecht's location at the Westfield Wheaton mall. County Executive Isiah Leggett, whose office had announced that he would be cutting the ribbon, arrived shortly before 8 a.m. and the ribbon-cutting was re-enacted, holding up more shoppers who appeared impatient to get inside the store. Fahey said he decided to cut the ribbon earlier because "we have members who are waiting to shop." Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal (D-At large) also came to the Costco opening. "This is …

I would hope that the initial frenzy over a new Costco will die down, but let's remember as we are fighting mall traffice that MONTGOMERY COUNTY approved an exception against building additional parking spaces on account of the new Costco. Thanks, guys.   more ›

The store is really nice and has lots of products that other Costcos don't have. The preview on the 9th was very nice and the opening on the 10th was great. It's so nice to be only 5 minutes away instead of the half an hour or more it took to get to the other stores. And I'll still shop often at Giant and Safeway, because Costco has a limited product line. Surprisingly, there weren't a lot of …   more ›

Taste of Wheaton: No Exhibitor Booths This Year

Find out what will be taking their place.

The Taste of Wheaton, an annual street festival featuring local restaurants selling low-cost "tastes" of their food, will not have room for any exhibitor booths this year, according to Sidney Cooper, the marketing and events manager for the Wheaton Urban District. In years past, the exhibitor booths have been an opportunity for local businesses, civic associations, non-profits and other organizations to share information about themselves with the community. So, what is taking the place of the booths this year? "We will add a cooking demonstration tent featuring chefs from local restaurants and also have a food & wine tent featuring local farmers/artisans along with cheeses, meats, etc from the newly opened Costco," Cooper wrote in an email…

The Taste of Wheaton is now on the calendar at Wheatonmd.org (http://www.wheatonmd.org/events/item/taste-of-wheaton1). I met with Ana L. van Balen, the Mid-County Regional Service Director, about a week ago to discuss the exclusion of civic booths from the event in 2013. She stated [paraphrasing] that "civic booths are not being excluded from the event", but that they are "adding new things", …   more ›

Countdown to Costco: When Will the Wheaton Store Open?

Keep track of how much time is left until Costco opens at the Wheaton mall.

The Wheaton Costco will open Wednesday, April 10, at the Westfield Wheaton mall. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 8 a.m., according to the mall's marketing director, Ken Buckner. After the ribbon-cutting, Costco will be open for customers. Will you be shopping at Costco on the day it opens? Tell us in the comments.
