Rory Lewis, a sophomore at Albert Einstein High School in Kensington, set a new state record in the boys' 100-yard butterfly race on Saturday. Lewis beat out the competition at the Maryland 4A/3A swimming and diving championship with a time of 51.06 seconds, according to the swimming website Reachforthewall.com. The race was held at the University of Maryland’s Eppley Recreation Center in College Park. For more results from other races, see the PDF attached to this article.

Silver Spring native Rebecca Sugar got her start at a Montgomery County high school arts program.
Rebecca Sugar draws. She tells stories. She composes songs on her ukulele. And, despite rebelling against the idea as a teenager, she has a point. She also has a bright future. When her new animated show, Steven Universe, debuts later this year, the 25-year-old Silver Spring native will become the first woman to create a show for Cartoon Network. Her original and versatile style and work as a storyboard artist on the Emmy-nominated Cartoon Network show Adventure Time earned her a nomination for “Best Storyboarding in a Television Production” at the 39th Annual Annie Awards, honoring the best in animation. However, scores from the Wheaton High School class of 2012 students came in last in Montgomery County Public Schools rankings.
Good news from the schools: Montgomery County public school students in the class of 2012 "set an all-time record on the SAT and significantly outperformed their peers across the state and the nation on the college entrance exam," according to a Montgomery County Public Schools press release. "MCPS graduates scored an average combined score of 1,651 on the SAT, which is 184 points higher than state of Maryland public school graduates and 153 points higher than the nation’s graduates, according to data released [on Monday, Sept. 24] ... by the College Board," the statement continued. Wolverines have their sights set on a Division 4 crown that has eluded them since 2008.
Photos by Andy Jones; article by Sebastian Montes Watkins Mill swimming kept its undefeated season afloat on Saturday, rallying late against Einstein and cruising past Wheaton at the Germanton Aquatic Center. Einstein and Watkins Mill were neck-and-neck for both the boys and girls heading into the final events: the 100-meter breaststroke and the 400-meter freestyle relay. With victory hanging in the balance, Watkins Mill swimmers claimed the top three spots in both breaststroke races, then went on to win the both relays, giving the boys a 90-79 win and the girls a 90-75 win over Einstein. Bobby and the Believers play at pre-fireworks show.
Fans of fireworks in the area will not have to go too far to enjoy them, as the Recreation Department puts on the "Mid-County Sparkles", one of two county-run fireworks extravaganzas on July 4. The event starts at 7:30 at Einstein High School. Parking will be in the Wheaton mall, and a shuttle will pick up revelers at both the Metro station and at the mall. Bobby and the Believers, a 11-piece band, will start the show with a concert. The fireworks will start around 9:15 p.m., when the sun is completely set. Food vendors will be on site at Einstein. We are in the downcounty consortium of 5 high schools and she can choose to anyone of the 4 high schools listed above plus Montgomery Blair. Can you tell us the % of students who take the SAT in each of the 5 high schools? Has it gone up or down since last year? That can influence scores.   more ›
