Glenallan Students Get Preview of New School

Dustin Construction explains the elementary school's 'green' features, asks students to do their part.

"You guys ready to see pictures of your new school?" the project manager asked. "Yes!" came the enthusiastic cry from third, fourth and fifth graders gathered in the cafeteria at Fairland Center Thursday morning. Sarah Cummings and Michael Hoffman, project managers with Gaithersburg-based Dustin Construction, showed Glenallan Elementary School students the plans for their new school building at the request of the school's PTA. Glenallan students will finish the 2012-2013 school year at Fairland Center on Old Columbia Pike in Silver Spring as construction wraps up in Wheaton. At the end of August, they will start classes in their brand new building at the corner of Heurich and Randolph roads. Cummings and Hoffman explained the "green" …

Lunch Lessons: Mixed Feelings on Wheaton Public School Lunches

Many students have adjusted to the new breakfast and lunch standards and have started to enjoy eating healthy, but some students still remain skeptical about cafeteria food.

Students are learning to eat healthy and are no longer going hungry in Wheaton. Public schools in Wheaton have started incorporating special programs to assist children and supply them with the healthy food they need to sustain themselves and help them focus on their schoolwork. In 2008, Governor Martin O’Malley took on an initiative to end childhood hunger in Maryland by 2015. With only two years left, it may be difficult to achieve, but Kerri Kimbrell-Silva from the Montgomery County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services said, “We are sure trying.” While Maryland is one of the richest states in the country, 10 percent of its residents live in poverty and are constantly struggling against hunger, according to the Manna Food Center’s …

Glenallan Students Participating in Worldwide 'Day of Play'

Students at Glenallan Elementary School have constructed cardboard games for Caine’s Arcade Day of Play.

What started with a 9-year-old boy named Caine creating a cardboard arcade has become a global challenge centered on children's play and creativity. Tomorrow, the Caine-inspired Cardboard Challenge and Day of Play comes to Wheaton. More than 100 students at Glenallan Elementary School have been designing and building their own cardboard creations after school for the last two weeks, Jennifer DePasquale of the Glenallan PTA told Patch. And on Saturday, from 12-2 p.m., the students will take their cardboard games--and play! What's the coolest thing you've ever made out of cardboard? Tell us in the comments.

May Construction Watch: Glenallan Elementary School

See how construction is progressing at the site of Glenallan Elementary School in Glenmont.

As construction goes forward, we encourage you to take photos and upload them to this gallery so that everyone on Patch can keep track of progress. During construction, Glenallan Elementary School students are taking classes at a holding site in Silver Spring, Fairland Center. Glenallan is one of six Montgomery County elementary schools that moved during winter break. Three, including Glenallan, are currently at holding sites, and another three moved from those same holding sites back into the renovated school buildings. Students and parents said goodbye to the old Glenallan school building on Heurich Road at a Dec. 21 Farewell Tea before the start of winter break. One Last Chance to Roam the Halls

The Glenallan Elementary School PTA is hosting a Farewell Tea today--an opportunity to share memories about the old school building before modernization begins.

Glenallan Elementary School students are finishing classes a day early this holiday season, on Dec. 22. And when they return from winter vacation, it won’t be to the building off of Randolph Road. Instead, the students will settle into classes at the Fairland Center in Silver Spring, a holding site, while county construction crews modernize Glenallan. Glenallan is one of six Montgomery County elementary schools moving during winter break. Three, including Glenallan, are moving out of their buildings and into holding sites, and another three are vacating those same holding sites and moving back into the renovated schools. This last week of school in December has been dubbed “Goodbye Glenallan Week,” and the PTA is hosting a Farewell Tea …
