Eight of Montgomery County's Metro stations have more than 15,000 parking spaces.
Most Metro commuters know a few tricks of the trade when it comes to parking. At many stations, if you arrive too late in the morning, you may just be out of luck when it comes to snagging a space. But it turns out there are more than enough parking spaces available to Metro riders at stations in Montgomery County. Some stations, though, are more popular for parkers than others, according to data released to Patch by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Of the 13,884 parking spaces at eight Montgomery County Metro stations, only 82 percent were used on an average weekday in August 2011, the last time WMATA collected data on parking usage. The parking garage brings the total of parking spaces at Glenmont Metro Station to 3,000.
Demand for parking near the Glenmont Metro Station has long exceeded availability. But a new Metro parking garage, which replaces the former Kiss & Ride lot on the west side of the intersection of Glenallan and Georgia avenues, adds 1,200 parking spaces. Parking on one of the garage’s six levels costs $4.75. The 1,800 parking spaces in the east side garage across the street usually fill up by 8 a.m. every day, County Executive Isiah Leggett said at the Monday morning ribbon cutting ceremony for the new garage. Councilmember Nancy Floreen, U.S. Representative Chris van Hollen, and State Sen. Roger Manno also spoke at the ceremony. “This garage is a tribute to creative financing,” Floreen said. County planners are holding a community visioning workshop on February 4.
A new Metro parking garage is just one of the ways Glenmont planners hope to maximize that community’s access to public transportation with future development. An update to the Glenmont Sector Plan, designed to create a framework to guide development for the next 15-20 years, is nearing the end of its first stage. The Montgomery County Planning Board will meet Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. to review a scope of work for the Glenmont Sector Plan update. This scope of work document outlines the purpose of the update, the ways the planners will engage the community, and the project timeline. Having used both the Wheaton & Glenmont stations to commute for a former job, I can say there are three factors at work here, two of which Mr Samuel mentioned in his comments. 1) August is not a good month for this study because it is a primary vacation month. In addition, basing the study on a single month's figures is not good research; a sample of at least 3 full months should be used. 2) … more ›
