The first-round series between the Capitals and the New York Rangers has folks talking.
The Washington Capitals took care of business at home, but lost to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Monday, narrowing their lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. The series has Montgomery County residents who love to "rock the red" tweeting. @score429 tweeted: The Rangers-Caps series is the best of the 1st round.Tough, two-way hockey. The team that wins will be tough to beat in the East. #nyr #caps @moneymetalcakes of Olney encouraged fans to grow a playoff beard like the players: "Join me, grow a playoff beard at http://po.st/TLWWBR . The fan who raises the most $ now thru 5/10 at 730 pm wins a #Caps signed jersey." @fatbradpitt of Silver Spring thought Caps defensive lapses contributed to…

Metrorail to go to OT if Caps do.
Metrorail, which has a station near Verizon Center (Gallery Place/Chinatown), will stay open an hour later if any Washington Capitals hockey playoff games run late or go into overtime, according to The Washington Post. The Capitals open their quest for the Stanley Cup against the New York Rangers on at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Last year, Game 3 of the Capitals’ playoff series against the Rangers went to triple overtime, ending well after midnight—when Metro typically closes on weekdays. The Post reports that an announcement will be made inside the Verizon Center by 11 p.m. Metro riders will be able to exit the transit system at any station, but will only be able to enter at Gallery Place (all entrances), Judiciary Square (only on F Street) and …

I feel that I learn this lesson over and over—even the hardest parenting days are worth it in the end.
There are times when we, as parents, are pushed by circumstances beyond the normal parameters of parenting into extreme do-or-die desperation parenting episodes. Examples that come to mind include shipwreck; the Great Depression; or, in my case, the nearly 12-hour bus ride home from my son’s special hockey tournament with our closest 52 friends. Honestly, people, it’s a miracle we hadn’t resorted to fistfighting and cannibalism by the time we arrived home. We had set out on our Rockville to Lake Placid, New York, trip on Thursday full of joy and excitement with two and a half days of hockey and tournament activities in front of us. All of the players were excited to get to spend time with each other as they played hooky from school, and …

Patch brings you an update on a special needs hockey team in Montgomery County.
"Every once in a while as a parent, I get to experience something so powerful that it humbles me to my core," Wheaton mom Jean Winegardner wrote last March in her White Knuckle Parenting column on Patch. Winegardner shared with readers the magical experience of watching her son Jack play in a special hockey tournament in New York. Special hockey is hockey for kids and adults with developmental disabilities. Later this week, Winegardner and her son are going to Lake Placid, New York, for another tournament with the Cheetahs. Winegardner has this update for Patch readers: "It will be really exciting to see Jack and his team play in a former Olympic town, especially one that was home to the famous 1980 Miracle on Ice game. He goes to practice…

A fundraising Cheetah-thon will be held this Saturday in Rockville.
The Cheetahs, Montgomery County’s first adapted ice hockey program for people with developmental disabilities such as autism and Down syndrome, are looking for people to pledge donations to those who are skating in the fundraiser this Saturday. The proceeds will go toward ice time and equipment expenses. In March, Patch columnist and Wheaton parent Jean Winegardner shared how her son's experience with the team has touched her. "It truly is indescribable and it is absolutely a mix of many things, but mostly it is joy," she wrote. "It is joy and it is magic, because there really is magic in special hockey." The Cheetah-thon will be held on Saturday, May 12, 5:00 7:00 p.m. at the Rockville Ice Arena, 50 Southlawn Court, Rockville, MD 20850. …

There are not very many things that I have experienced in my life that are as powerful as watching my autistic son play special hockey.
Every once in a while as a parent, I get to experience something so powerful that it humbles me to my core. I was lucky enough to have one of these experiences last weekend courtesy of the American Special Hockey Association's (ASHA) special hockey tournament. Special hockey is hockey for kids and adults with developmental disabilities. My autistic 8-year-old, Jack, has skated for two seasons with the Montgomery Cheetahs, a local special hockey team that practices weekly at Cabin John ice rink. Last weekend, he and nearly 30 other players from the Cheetahs traveled to Jamestown, New York, to play in the ASHA special hockey tournament. It was magical. I rewrote the first paragraph to this column a million times, trying to find a lead in the…
