Couple Charged with Housing Assistance Fraud

The husband claimed his wife was a live-in aide, police say

A husband and wife living near Leisure World in Silver Spring have been charged with committing fraud in order to qualify for housing assistance, according to a statement by Montgomery County police Tuesday. Isiah Ben’ Israel, 48, who was receiving low-income housing assistance from the Housing Opportunities Commission, allegedly submitted paperwork to the HOC last year, claiming that an aide now lived in his home in the 2800 block of Clear Shot Drive in Silver Spring. The live-in aide turned out to be his wife, Chiquita Anita Ben’ Israel, using her maiden name in the paperwork, police said.  Iinvestigators said they determined that Chiquita Anita Ben’ Israel, 53, works for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and earns a salary that makes …

Redevelopment Proposals for Ambassador Apartments Under Review

Final evaluations for developer proposals for the Wheaton apartments are set for Nov. 27.

  The Montgomery County Housing Opportunities Commission is in the process of redeveloping Ambassador Apartments, located at the northwest corner of the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and University Boulevard. The Ambassador's 162 low-income residential units are owned by Wheaton-University Boulevard Limited Partnership, a tax credit partnership. This redevelopment could also involve an adjacent property owned by Willco Companies. The HOC voted on Wednesday to enter into a memorandum of understanding with Wilco. The purpose of the project is to “create an energy-efficient, environmentally sustainable, mixed-income residential rental development…with a construction schedule that displaces no current resident," according to a preliminary …
