Whiz Kid: Blair High’s Neil Davey

Davey will compete for the regional title in November.

Montgomery Blair High’s Neil Davey was named a regional finalist in the 2012-13 Siemens Competition in Math, Science, and Technology on Oct. 19. Davey, a Gaithersburg resident and high school junior, was received the prestigious annual award in recognition of his research in the fields of science and technology. His research, conducted over the summer, explored “Deletion of Endonuclease G Disrupts Mitochondrial Homeostasis and Leads to Reduced Virulence in the Human Protozoan Parasite Leishmania Mexicana.” “I am honored to be named a Regional Finalist in the Siemens Competition for my project that was aimed at creating a vaccine candidate for the parasitic disease Leishmaniasis," Davey said. Preview: White House to Host Hispanic Summit at Blair High

About 24 officials are expected to attend.

  The White House will host a Hispanic Community Action Summit at Montgomery Blair High School—located at 51 University Boulevard East—on Saturday. The event starts at 9 a.m. This daylong summit is the latest in a series of gatherings held across the country to connect senior administration officials to Hispanic community leaders and members. During the event, White House and Cabinet officials will discuss issues critical to Maryland’s Hispanic community and what President Barack Obama could shed light on for congress. This will include forums ranging from the economy, healthcare, education, and immigration. If you would like to join in on this discussion, you can register to participate in the summit. Blair Girls Beat Kennedy at the Buzzer

The Blazers beat the Cavaliers on the final shot on Friday.

The people who attended Friday's girls' basketball matchup between the Montgomery Blair Blazers and Kennedy Cavaliers will be talking about it all weekend. The contest featured two teams looking to make a statement early this basketball season. The Blazers (2-0) outscored the Cavaliers (0-2) in the first quarter, 12-7, led by junior guard Myla Sapp's inside presence and senior forward Sarah McMillan's rebounding. Blair's trapping defense held Kennedy at bay throughout the period. In the second quarter, Kennedy surged back behind the hot shooting of junior guard Desha Nowrn, who scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half, and helped even the score at 17-17 with 1:23 left in the half.  The Blazers led 21-17 at halftime. Striving for Excellence: A Q&A With Blair High School Teacher James Schafer

Schafer is in the running for Maryland teacher of the year.

When James Schafer received the news he was a state finalist for teacher of the year, he was humbled. He is one of seven teachers in Maryland who have been given that honor this year. But Schafer is no stranger to being recognized for his work with students. In April, he was named Teacher of the Year for Montgomery County Public Schools and was one of four county teachers who received the 2010 Awards for Excellence in Teaching from the Marian Greenblatt Education Fund. Schafer, an eight-year veteran, teaches subjects that many students can find difficult: physics and math.
