Meet the mothers who contribute to Wheaton Patch.
On Mother's Day, we would like to recognize the moms whose writing you may run across on the Wheaton Patch: Jean writes the weekly White Knuckle Parenting column, where she shares her everyday experiences as a mother of three. Frances, who has four children in different MCPS schools, blogs in the Local Voices section on Wheaton Patch. The Maryland chapter of M.A.D.D. has started blogging on Patch. Read how parents can help prevent underage drinking. And we'd like to give a special shout-out to Nneka St. Gerard, the winner of our "Best Mom in Montgomery County" photo contest. Nneka's husband Henriot, who nominated her, blogs in the Local Voices section on Wheaton Patch. Congratulations, Nneka! Are you a mother? Would you like to start a …

It's Mother's Day weekend, and you know what that means—flowers, chocolates, maybe brunch or breakfast in bed for Mom. Patch wanted to help. We honored Maryland's moms by encouraging their families to laud their tireless child-raising efforts on Patch sites across the state. We asked readers in the Patch coverage area to upload photos of their moms and tell us what was great about the mother figures in their lives. Wow, there are some amazing moms out there, and we wanted to recognize them with a contest this year. After all the uploads were collected, a mom from each county we cover was randomly selected as a $50 gift card winner. All the winners are featured in our gallery. But it's not too late to share stories and photos about your …

In advance of Mother's Day, I want to say thank you to all the mothers out there.
Mother's Day is coming up this Sunday. If—and I know this only applies to a few of you—you have a mother or know a mother, consider this your fair warning to put a note on your calendar to say something nice to her this weekend. If you are a mother, prepare to put your feet up and be doted on. That's how it works, right? My family doesn't usually do a lot for Mother's Day. Generally they let me sleep in—without guilt—and I get some lovely handmade gifts, which are the best kind, in my opinion. I know that I feel like I get a wonderful Mother's Day gift every single day—and that is having the privilege to parent my three beautiful munchkins. That said, it's not all ceramic hand prints and relaxing mornings around here. I'm betting it's not …

Poets write about them. Strong men cry in their presence. We honor them each year with a special day punctuated by hearts and flowers, and perhaps even breakfast in bed. Don't just settle for all the customary ways to celebrate how awesome your mom is. Instead, upload a photograph of her to this article and write a caption telling us what's so great about the moms of Montgomery County. Next Friday, May 11, at noon, we'll randomly pick a winner and call her the "Best Mom of Montgomery County." Now that's a gift. But if that's not enough, we'll also award you a $50 gift certificate to spend any way you want on mom. Contest rules are attached. Patch will also compile photos of moms from across the state for a "Moms of Maryland" photo …

Jean Winegardner will share her experiences parenting a child with autism.
You may know her as the writer of the Wheaton Patch's weekly White Knuckle Parenting column. But Jean Winegardner, mother of three, also publishes her own blog, called Stimeyland, and actively participates in the D.C. area blogging community. And this Sunday, one week before Mother's Day, Winegardner will join other D.C. area writers onstage to share her story about the challenges and joys of motherhood. [Get daily and breaking news email updates by signing up for free newsletters from Wheaton Patch.] "Listen To Your Mother" or LTYM is a national event that started two years ago in Madison. Local groups apply to hold the show in their hometowns, and then they make it their own by recruiting local performers and donating a portion of the …

I'd like to wish a special happy Mother's Day to all of the men who have served as both mother and father to their children, instead of abandoning them to someone else's care--and to all of the mothers who have done double-duty as single parents, or as wives and husbands of an active-duty spouse. Carrying a foetus only makes one a biological mother: it's doing the hard, hard work of raising a …   more ›
