Fetching Kia

Meet Kia, a handsome shepherd mix who is playful, affectionate, and a loyal family dog.

Hi, guys! My name’s Kia and I’ve been waiting patiently to find my new family for a while now. I’m not sure what the holdup is, so I’m taking this time to introduce myself because I know they are out there. I’m still a young pup at only three years old, and I have a goofy, playful nature and am an active dog. I weigh about 60 pounds, and Mutts Matter thinks I’m a shepherd mix, though some folks have suggested I may have some rottweiler or hound in me too. I just know I’m a mutt and proud of it. I’m a handsome dog with a sturdy build, shiny coat, and a big, infectious smile. My foster mom, Kelly, calls me a cuddle bug because I’m affectionate and always want to be next to her. I follow her from room to room, and if she lies down on the …

Industrious Little Jonah

Cute little Jonah has a sweet nature and independent spirit that makes him the perfect companion.

Jonah is an adorable cocker spaniel puppy who is barely a year old and weighs 28 pounds. He has the softest, silky coat with beautiful rich chocolate and creamy white coloring, and big round puppy-dog eyes that just make you smile. With that perfect older-puppy temperament where he’s still playful and loves to hang out with you, but also independent and smart, Jonah doesn’t need constant attention… he’s got things to do.  Little Jonah took it upon himself to escape from a very hard life. He was found running at large with a bark collar and part of a chain still attached to him. He was being kept outside and neglected; his coat was matted, he had cherry eye, and he had tested positive for heartworm. These issues, and the discomfort Jonah …

Lucky's Best Is Yet To Come

Meet Lucky, a beautiful, young plott hound mix who needs a little luck in her life.

Hey there, Patch friends! My name is Lucky and I’m very pleased to meet you. I’m a gorgeous plott hound mix with striking, honey-brown eyes, and a vibrant dark brindle coat that really makes me stand out from the pack. I weigh about 50 pounds, but I’m just a little over a year old, so I still have some filling out and maturing to do. I’m a sweet and affectionate dog who needs some structure and leadership in my life. I’m great inside the house with my foster family and their dogs, but it takes me some time to trust new people and new situations. I think I probably need my own personal dog whisperer, a strong leader who will work with me to complete my rehabilitation. I will admit that it’s a little ironic that my name is Lucky, since …

Mutts Matter Rescue: Meet Odie the Optimist

Meet Odie, a lovable, special needs pug who is looking for his special someone.

Hey, guys! My name is Odie, and I’m one of those glass-half-full types of dog. I find joy in the simple pleasures of life, like snuggling with my person and eating treats of any kind. Love and food...what more do you need? I’m a 6- or 7-year-old pug, I weigh a little over 20 pounds and I am almost totally blind, but that doesn’t stop me or dampen my spirits. I’m a healthy and resilient dog who is both confident and social, and I love to share affection.  Mutts Matter rescued me on Thanksgiving eve, when a kind soul reached out to them for help. I’m a casualty of divorce, and then my dad no longer wanted me, so he wouldn’t let me in the house. I was living outside, tied up to the porch and exposed to all the elements. This was a pretty …

New Year, New Chance for Duncan

Meet Duncan, a handsome young mastiff mix who has been patiently waiting for his new family and a place to belong.

Hey guys, Happy New Year! I’m checking back in to let you know I’m still here, patiently waiting and longing for my new family. I know they’re out there, so please read and share my story so they can find me.  Please allow me to reintroduce myself. My name is Duncan, and I’m a loving, playful, and sometimes mischievous young mastiff mix. Folks tell me I’m handsome, and I have to agree with them... I’m a strapping 75 pounds, and have a unique, sable-colored coat and striking grey-green eyes. Mutts Matter thinks I may have some Labrador in me too. I’m still a young pup at only 18 months old, and like most adolescents I will try to test my boundaries, but isn’t that what youth is all about? I just need an assertive leader to help show me …

Thank You!

Patch readers made a real difference in helping to save nearly 350 dogs this year.

As 2012 draws to a close, Mutts Matter Rescue would like to thank the Patch community and our network of dedicated volunteers for your tremendous support. With your help, we saved nearly 350 dogs this year, expanded our team, added new foster families, and hopefully made folks more aware of the importance and need for dog rescue.  Rescue is a community of volunteers, so we couldn’t do it without you. Whether you’ve helped by sharing our pups’ stories with your friends and family on Facebook, donating to help cover veterinary costs, fostering, or doing home visits, it all makes a difference in saving these dogs’ lives. We live very busy, demanding lives here in the DC area, but taking some time out to help our little furry friends is not …

2:34 pm on Thursday, December 20, 2012

Thank you for the thank you. I for one want to thank Mutts Matter Rescue and Melanie for what they do for homeless dogs. I have fostered dogs for this group for one year. I have personally witnessed a well run organization with leadership that truly cares for every animal brought into it's fold. Dogs are taken from horrible places, given full physicals, medical care provided no matter the cost. I…   more ›

Why You Should Rescue Your Next Pet

With millions of animals crowding the shelters, rescuing your next pet is the right thing to do.

Have you ever noticed that people like to tell you when their dog is a rescue? That’s because they know they played an important part in saving the life of a deserving animal, and have gotten an amazing companion out of it. They have every right to be proud; rescuing an animal is the right thing to do. We want folks to spread the word so that others will consider the incredible good and personal satisfaction that comes from choosing to rescue.  Rescue has been around a long time, but it’s only recently become a part of our mainstream culture. Adopting a rescued pet is the final step in a process that involves a dedicated network of volunteers who devote their time, resources, and homes to save these once-forgotten animals from bad …

Mutts Matter Rescue: Not-So-Furry Murray

Meet Murray, a young and playful collie mix who is ready to be part of your pack.

Hey guys, it’s Murray checking in! As you can see from my pictures, I’m a handsome young boy. Mutts Matter thinks I'm a smooth-coated collie mix because I have the sweet, social temperament and long, delicate snout of a collie, but my coat is short and easy to maintain. While I’m still just a puppy at only ten months old, I’m almost fully-grown and weigh 60 pounds now. I have some puppy energy in me and need my daily exercise and play time. Mostly, I’m just a loving and affectionate boy who’s good with kids and other dogs, and really love to be around my people. My foster mom, Leslie, says I’m a 60-pound lap dog. I guess I don’t realize how big I am and her lap really seems like a great place for me to sit. This makes her laugh, but I …

Mutts Matter Rescue: Monty's Christmas Wish

Monty is a sweet, social bully pup who has been waiting patiently to find his family and hopes to be home for Christmas.

Hey, guys! My name is Monty, and I’m checking in to see if my family-to-be is out there looking for me. I’ve been waiting patiently for them, and my Christmas wish is to find my new home and settle in with a family who loves me and wants my company. I’m a sweet, curious, playful pit-lab mix, a little over a year old now, and I weigh about 60 pounds. Obviously I’m a handsome guy, but my thin physique is still playing catch up with my big, blocky head. I have a luxurious black coat and a big, warm bully smile that lights up for every new friend I meet.  I haven’t had a lot of consistency in my life so far, but I’m the kind of pup who rolls with the punches. I’ve already seen some of the best and the worst that people have to offer a dog …

Make a Difference This Holiday Season and Help a Pup in Need

Do you love dogs and want to make a difference? Consider becoming a foster family for a rescue dog during the holidays.

I’ve written a few articles about fostering dogs over the past two years, and multiple readers from the Patch community have stepped up to become foster families. It’s great to see more and more people becoming aware of dog rescue, getting involved and understanding the importance and vital need of fostering. Fostering is the backbone of rescue, and we can only save as many dogs as we have foster families available to welcome them into their homes. It was only a few years ago that I learned about fostering and how it works. Fostering involves opening your heart and home to a pup in need, and giving them a safe place to land and some TLC until they’ve found their new home. Some foster pups are easier than others, but all bring great joy …
