Kennedy's 16-7 fourth-quarter finish, along with only turning the ball over once in the second half, sealed the deal. Mid-Season Update: Local Girls' Basketball

Blazers and Cavaliers thrive while Knights and Gladiators struggle.

Two-thirds of the high school girls' basketball regular season are behind us, and the standings have started to shaped up in clearer fashion than earlier in the year.  Blair, 10-4, 3-3 Montgomery 4A East, 3rd place The Blazers have played consistently strong basketball this year, but the 4A East is incredibly strong. Johanna Lopez and Myla Sapp pace their offense, but they may need a viable third option to really compete with the best in the division over the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs. Kennedy, 8-6, 5-1 Montgomery 3A/2A East, 2nd place Kennedy's overall record is mediocre, but their dominance in 3A/2A play has been remarkable. Next week's matchup with Blake will likely be a battle for first place. Northwood, 3-8, 3-3…

High School Basketball Mid-Season Update: Some Local Teams Find Success, Others Still Searching

Kennedy and Wheaton have been winners thus far, while Blair and Northwood are still trying to find the missing links.

High school basketball seasons in Montgomery County are nearing their halfway point. Most teams play 22 to 24-game regular-season schedules, depending on tournament play, and as of Jan. 6, teams in and around Silver Spring have played nine games apiece. At this juncture of the season, it is perhaps still too early to make any grand conclusions about where teams may stack up come late February. However, some trends have become clear in the early going, which may strongly suggest the trajectory of these teams. Blair, 3-6 The Blazers have struggled to score so far this season, averaging just 42.7 points per game as a team, which has landed them at the bottom of the Montgomery 4A East standings. Since the return of senior forward Charles …

Northwood Basketball Team Falls to 0-2 with Loss to Quince Orchard

The Gladiators lost 55-43 on Monday evening thanks in part to poor free throw shooting.

The Gladiators of Northwood High School traveled to North Potomac on Monday evening to take on the undefeated Quince Orchard Cougars. Although the game was close throughout the first quarter, which ended 16-10 in favor of the home team, the Gladiators fell to 0-2 with the 55-43 loss. Quince Orchard broadened its lead in the second quarter behind the hot shooting of junior Myck Miller, who poured in 10 of his 13 total points in the period. Senior Andre Gaines also contributed six points. The Cougars' offense was complimented by its superior trap defense, which caused numerous turnovers in the first half. "Our trap defense is pretty good," Quince Orchard Coach Paul Foringer said. "We expect to get some easy buckets off of that and create a …

Northwood Basketball Preseason Ends on Uncertain Note

The Gladiators lost to Wise in their exhibition finale on Saturday.

Judging a team's talent level from a preseason game is often difficult. Judging a team's talent level when playing against the biggest high school in the state is also a tricky endeavor. Judging a team's talent level in a preseason game against the biggest high school in the state is nearly impossible. Such was the case on Saturday afternoon when the Northwood Gladiators played their sixth and final preseason scrimmage of the year at Wise High School in Upper Marlboro.  Wise Arena, as the Pumas' venue is aptly named, is without exaggeration, among the most exquisite public high school gymnasiums in the country. Complete with seating for 5,000 spectators, a hanging scoreboard, light-up backboards and an indoor track, the venue is the DMV's …

Northwood Basketball Team Ready to Roll: Conversations with Coach Tony Dickens and AD Marco Fuggitti

Dickens and Fuggitti talk about the upcoming season.

Basketball preseason at Northwood High School began last week. Led by Coach Tony Dickens, the team is hoping to rebound from the loss of their leading scorer last year. Dickens spoke with Patch about the upcoming season. Wheaton Patch: Give us a quick recap of last year's teams, both the varsity and junior varsity. Tony Dickens: Last year I believe the JV played around .500 ball. The varsity won one playoff game and lost in the second round. We went through some injuries and had some things going on, but overall it was a pretty productive year. Patch: What are your expectations as far as transitioning from last year to this year? Dickens: We return three starters but we lost probably about 35 percent of our scoring with Ed Dyson, who …
