The survey results will help Montgomery County's Department of Economic Development, as it tries to flesh out a new small business assistance program.
A survey of small businesses in the Wheaton Urban District found that the top three "immediate business concerns" are parking, rent and safety. The Wheaton Redevelopment Program, which is part of the county's Department of General Services, conducted the survey in April and May. There was a 36 percent response rate; of the 298 surveys given to businesses, 108 were returned. Peter McGinnity of the Wheaton Redevelopment Program said the survey will help to inform the county's Department of Economic Development, as it tries to flesh out Bill 6-12. Trying to find a parking spot in downtown Wheaton? Make sure you bring enough coins for the meter. Parking rates in Wheaton are set to increase, effective July 1: Public transportation fares also are going up. This Sunday, the cost of a Ride On cash fare or token will increase to $1.80, and a fare paid with SmarTrip Card will increase to $1.60. A Ride On monthly pass will increase to $45. Westfield will not be required to build new parking structures for the new Costco in Wheaton.
The Department of Permitting Services has ruled that Westfield does not need additional parking for the new Costco wing at Wheaton Mall. In November Westfield asked the county to waive a parking requirement set at 4.5 parking spaces per 1,000 square feet of what is called “gross leasable area.” Last week, the Department of Permitting Services granted this request, lowering the parking ratio to 4.0. The Kensington Heights Civic Association and the Kensington View Civic Association had opposed the parking waiver request, arguing that because Costco has not yet been built, Westfield could not yet properly evaluate how much parking would be needed. Looks like Glenmont metro parking is also increasing $5.00 a day. Not as expensive as DC parking, of course, but with Metro fares also increasing, it's a bummer!   more ›
