Carroll Knolls Park Coming to Georgia Avenue

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission acquired the land that was formerly home to the Maryland College of Art and Design.

A new park is coming to the stretch of Georgia Avenue between Wheaton and Forest Glen. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission announced Thursday that it had acquired a 2.47 acre plot of land on the west side of Georgia Avenue to create the new Carroll Knolls Local Park. The site was previously owned by the Montgomery College Foundation, Inc., and formerly home to the Maryland College of Art and Design (MCAD). The land was acquired through the department’s Legacy Open Space Program for $1,140,000. An additional 1.2 acres will be incorporated into the park with the anticipated donation of an adjacent lot and the incorporation of several undeveloped road rights-of-way, resulting in a new local park almost four acres in …

White Knuckle Parenting: Wheaton Regional Playground—Terrific or Terrifying?

My family finally got a chance to check out Wheaton Regional's renovated playground. My kids had a blast. I had a panic attack.

Let's talk about Wheaton Regional Park, shall we? Now, I know that the renovated playground over there opened at the end of September, but I didn't get a chance to visit with my kids until a couple of weeks ago.  The first thing I want to say is that my kids had a blast. There are giant slides, a climbing mound, swings, a climbing web, plentiful sand, and more than enough playground equipment to keep my three children happy for hours.  I, on the other hand, nearly had a panic attack. The playground seemed intentionally designed to help kids escape from their parents. For instance, there is a giant, fenced, raised boardwalk bisecting the playground. Its sole purpose seems to be to obstruct parents' view of their kids and to provide child-…

I am so disappointed in the new Wheaton park. I think the whole thing was designed to get the kids to break a sweat while they're at the park, which is why they have to walk a quarter of a mile every time they want to go down the slides. The climbing structures leave no room for imagination-- no places to just sit and pretend you're in a ship or a treehouse, unlike the old park. It is like a gym …   more ›

Dog Owners Want Money From Permits Used to Improve Dog Parks

Wheaton dog park is one of five in the county affected by new permitting process.

Users of the dog park in Wheaton Regional Park are angry that money generated by a new permitting requirement won't be funneled into making needed upgrades at the small gravel park — one of the few places in the county where their dogs can run free. "We don't have a fenced yard, so this is really his only chance to get off the leash and run," said Paul Witting, who was at the park Sunday morning, watching his goldendoodle (a golden retriever and poodle mix) Donnie race around the park. Montgomery County requires dogs to be leashed when they are off their owners' property. Dogs are allowed to run free in five dog parks in the county system: Cabin John Regional Park, Olney Manor Park, Black Hill Regional Park, Ridge Road Recreational Park …

Melissa, Thank you for your article on the dog park. I don't have a problem with paying for my dogs to use the park, but I too would like to see the funds, or any funds for that matter, used toward improving conditions there. Here's hoping that the exposure we are getting with your help will lead to the park making these sorely needed improvements.   more ›
