A Korean restaurant ? It'll mostly likely follow the path of the previous concepts in that space unless they can produce enough foot traffic to pay the rent.   more ›

Bites Nearby: A Taste of Home at Los Chorros in Wheaton

Salvadoran restaurant in Wheaton celebrates traditions of two Americas.

The colorful main entrance might be the first thing you notice about Los Chorros. Next, come the paintings a local artist created to remind Pedro and Reina Lazo of special places in their hearts. They came to the U.S. from a small town in El Salvador in the early 1970s, bringing little more than their love for each other and their two sons. By 1989, the Lazos had their own restaurant in Wheaton. "It's their American dream. A lot of people come here just to be successful and have their own business, and that was really their goal," said Omar Lazo, one of the owners of Los Chorros and the oldest son. This month, the Lazo family is celebrating the 24th anniversary of the restaurant on Blueridge Avenue. Omar and his brother, Jason Lazo manage …

County Sorts Out Small Business Assistance Program

The program will help small businesses in Wheaton that anticipate a loss of customer parking when construction begins for an office building on Lot 13. But when will the program be funded?

Montgomery County's Department of Economic Development plans to get a headstart on the new Small Business Assistance Program to help local merchants prepare for massive construction on Lot 13 in the heart of Wheaton. Although the program applies to all businesses in the county that are adversely impacted by county redevelopment projects or redevelopment projects on county property, Wheaton businesses will likely be the primary beneficiaries as plans for redevelopment in the downtown area move forward. The County Council passed legislation establishing the program last spring, and the economic development department has been in the process of crafting regulations to implement it. The regulations have been posted on the Executive Register …

Seoul Food Moving Into Global Cafe Space

The Korean food truck owners will open their first restaurant in Wheaton, according to Washingtonian.

Out with the Jollof rice, in with the bibimbap. An Arlington-based food truck, Seoul Food, will soon find a home at the corner of University Boulevard and Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, Washingtonian reported earlier this week. The restaurant space, which is attached to an Exxon station at the busy intersection in downtown Wheaton, was formerly home to Global Cafe African Grill. Owners Hyun Shil and Jon Goree estimate a March or April opening date, according to Washingtonian. Read the full story at the Washingtonian web site.

Anton--I don't know if you've been inside, but there's limited seating space anyhow. It's a very challenging spot--inside an Exxon with limited seating--so maybe the carryout idea will work better. I, like you, would like to see greater diversity of restaurants (both ethnically and in ambience) and in other shops in Wheaton. Despite politicians/others calling Wheaton "eclectic," it's constantly …   more ›
