Which Week 4 high school football game should be featured as the Patch Game of the Week in Montgomery County?
The Quince Orchard Cougars rolled over Paint Branch in a matchup of unbeaten teams in the Week 3 Montgomery County Patch Game of the Week. Will a new team be featured for the second consecutive week or will the Cougars reign continue? Quince Orchard (3-0 overall, 0-0 division) plays host to Montgomery 4A West division rival Northwest (2-1, 1-0). Northwest is coming off a 55-0 win over Magruder and its only loss came on the road in Week 2 against undefeated Seneca Valley. Seneca Valley (3-0, 2-0) travels to Potomac for Week 4's only matchup of unbeaten teams as the Screaming Eagles take on the Churchill Bulldogs (3-0, 3-0). Schools Superintendent Joshua Starr announced Tuesday that Montgomery County Public Schools is considering a district-wide baseline testing program for student athletes.
With concussions on the rise among high school and collegiate athletes, Montgomery County Public Schools is investigating a program to try to do something about it. MCPS Superintendent Joshua Starr announced Tuesday that MCPS is considering a district-wide baseline testing program to assist in identifying student athletes who suffer concussions and to help in determining when they can safely return to the playing field, according to a news release. Starr told the Montgomery County Board of Education that MCPS will request proposals from outside providers that can administer and maintain the baseline testing program, according to the release. Could the Watkins Mill Wolverines varsity football squad be Montgomery County Patch readers' favorite team? Through the first two weeks of the season, it appears that way. Watkins Mill has been voted as the Montgomery County Patch High School Football Game of the Week for it's week 1 win over Poolesville and week 2 loss to Damascus. Might this be the week a new team is featured or will Patch follow Watkins Mill out to Blake High School as it tries to avoid a second consecutive loss? One week down, nine to go. High school football is officially underway in Montgomery County and Patch wants your help deciding what the biggest game is each week. In our inaugural Montgomery County Patch High School Football Game of the Week poll, readers selected Watkins Mill-Poolesville and the Wolverines rolled to a 42-14 victory. Edges highly anticipated Quince Orchard-Sherwood matchup.
In the inaugural Patch Montgomery County Football Game of the Week Poll, a surprising upstart edged out two of the county's elite programs to be selected as the Week 1 Game of the Week Friday night. With 46 percent of the vote, Watkins Mill-Poolesville knocked off Quince Orchard-Sherwood (26 percent) and the rest of the county to be nominated as GOTW. Quince Orchard is coming off a 13-1 season in which its only defeat came in overtime of the state championship. Cougars head coach Dave Mencarini told Patch he believes his program and Sherwood are the county's winningest over the last eight years. As Montgomery County Public Schools prepare to open its doors to students on Monday, Aug. 27, athletes across the county have been preparing for their respective seasons, officially as early as Aug. 11, unofficially for longer. In a new fall feature, Montgomery County's Patch sites will be selecting a high school football Game of the Week, but we need your help and it's really easy. Should the state pass stricter requirements when it comes to regulating and treating student athlete concussions?
Sports practices for public schools in Prince George's and Montgomery counties start up soon—but new state regulations may mean changes for athletes and coaches. The state school board passed new requirements last week that say athletic coaches in Maryland must be trained in identifying serious head injuries, The Baltimore Sun reports. Thomas Hearn, a Montgomery County parent, spoke to the state school board in May after his son sustained a concussion, and pushed for members to consider limiting the number of contact practices in a week, The Sun reported. The hall of fame's inaugural class includes five athletes, one coach/administrator and one coach.
Seven inductees took their places as the inaugural class of Wheaton High School's Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday, although two were unable to attend the ceremony and celebratory dinner at American Legion Post 268 in Wheaton. There are not very many things that I have experienced in my life that are as powerful as watching my autistic son play special hockey.
Every once in a while as a parent, I get to experience something so powerful that it humbles me to my core. I was lucky enough to have one of these experiences last weekend courtesy of the American Special Hockey Association's (ASHA) special hockey tournament. Special hockey is hockey for kids and adults with developmental disabilities. My autistic 8-year-old, Jack, has skated for two seasons with the Montgomery Cheetahs, a local special hockey team that practices weekly at Cabin John ice rink. Last weekend, he and nearly 30 other players from the Cheetahs traveled to Jamestown, New York, to play in the ASHA special hockey tournament. It was magical.
