The Montgomery County Council president used her voice to support a community petition to bring a Trader Joe's to a shopping center north of Glenmmont.
If Wheaton and Glenmont residents want to shop at a Trader Joe's, they must travel to the specialty grocery store's locations in Rockville and Silver Spring. But perhaps that will soon change. A community petition to bring Trader Joe's to the Plaza del Mercado Shopping Center at the corner of Bel Pre and Layhill roads has received more than 1,500 signatures on Change.org. "When Giant Foods closed their Plaza Del Marcado location, it left a great void for the surrounding neighborhoods," the petition states. "The Plaza Del Marcado shopping center is in desperate need of an anchor store and we believe Trader Joe's is just the ticket." Montgomery County Council President Nancy Navarro has taken notice. The FDA has announced another recall due to possible salmonella contamination.
Several companies have decided to recall nut butter products Monday after officials announced a possible salmonella outbreak at the New Mexico-based Sunland, Inc., according to CBSNews. The company expanded its recall to cashew butters, tahini and other peanut products. Last week, Maryland health officials confirmed one person had become sick with salmonella after eating peanut butter from Trader Joe's. The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in a press release warned residents not to eat Trader Joe’s brand Valencia Creamy Salted Peanut Butter made with sea salt. DC-area stores take one house brand off the shelves and offer refunds.
Trader Joe’s corporate officials say they are acting “out of an abundance of caution” and ordering the recall of one type of its house brand peanut butter over salmonella concerns. “Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” should not be eaten, the Monrovia-based specialty grocery chain said to City News Service, a southern California-based wire service. “We have no confirmed information that suggests this peanut butter is unsafe to eat,” the company stated to City News Service. But the food should not be eaten “pending health-related inquiries.” Trader Joe’s has several locations in the DC area, including Chevy Chase, Silver Spring and Foggy Bottom.
