Montgomery County Council will vote on Wheaton Redevelopment funding on April 10.
In their first meeting since the release of senior legislative analyst Jacob Sesker’s alternate $55 million redevelopment plan, members of the Wheaton Redevelopment Advisory Committee (WRAC) invited two county officials—Greg Ossont, deputy director of the Department of General Services and Adam Fogel, chief of staff for Councilmember Nancy Navarro—to help clarify the future of Wheaton’s redevelopment. The committee also discussed changes to the WRAC charter and some impending improvements to Price Street. The property at 11501 Georgia Avenue is in limbo with no active plans for redevelopment.
During the October WRAC Meeting, Chris Todd of Alliance Realty presented his company’s plans to develop the property currently known as the BB&T Building at the intersection of Blueridge and Georgia Avenues into a mixed-retail space with 255 apartments. Now, just two months later, those plans are defunct, leaving a hole in Wheaton’s redevelopment. Alliance Realty had contracted with AvalonBay Communities to take over the project after Avalon dropped its own plans to transform the space into a mixed residential-grocery project--as Patriot Realty planned a Safeway, parking and residential complex just a few blocks south on Georgia Avenue. Patch spoke with two employees of Alliance Realty—at the Reston, VA office and Alliance’s national …

Correction: The original article mistakenly implied that the Kensington Heights and Kensington View civic associations have officially opposed Costco's parking waiver application. In a letter attached to a Patch article regarding the waiver, the KHCA complained to the Department of Permitting Services about the process of review, but did not officially oppose the waiver. We regret the error. With small business the main focus of a two-hour session, the Wheaton Redevelopment Advisory Committee (WRAC) convened in the Mid-County Regional Services Center for its final meeting of 2011. WRAC welcomed Casey Wilson of the Maryland Small Business Development Center to discuss his center’s resources for Wheaton businesses, reviewed redevelopment …

The Wheaton Redevelopment Advisory Committee has not officially endorsed the potential move, but securing a government tenant for office space in downtown Wheaton would further WRAC aims.
The Wheaton Redevelopment Advisory Committee does not yet have an official position about the Montgomery County Planning Board’s recent decision to approve $200,000 for a feasibility study on moving the headquarters of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission to downtown Wheaton from Silver Spring. However, there does not seem to be anyone on the advisory body speaking out against it. “I haven’t heard any opposition to it from the committee,” WRAC vice chair Susan Petersen said. “I think people are generally excited about it and hopeful.” Rob Klein, who presented the redevelopment report to WRAC at its Oct. 19 meeting, called the funding approval “a major step.” “It’s an opportunity to make an office complex,” said Klein…

The elevators were not said in competition with Wheaton redevelopment just a short month ago. Now all of a sudden they want to give the 40 million instead to fund (JUST PART!) of the Bethesda metro elevators. WHY IS THAT EVEN A TRADE-OFF? Find other funds for the elevators. Over the past decade and more when something good is supposed to happen for Wheaton, the growing urban heart of montgomery …   more ›
