The Taste of Wheaton takes place June 9 this year.
The restaurants who set up booths at the Taste of Wheaton are there each year to sell inexpensive tastes of their food to the thousands of people who come to the festival. But on June 9, one Wheaton-based nonprofit will be at the annual festival asking for food donations. Mid-County United Ministries (MUM) will be running a food drive for the Capt. Joseph A. Mattingly, Jr. Food Pantry, along with Westfield Wheaton. Westfield has announced that it is doing its own Taste of Wheaton kick-off cooking demonstration and sampling event featuring Hollywood East Café on June 7 in the mall's food court. Taste of Wheaton will take place in the Wheaton Triangle at the corner of Grandview Avenue and Reedie Drive in downtown Wheaton (one block north of …

The "Café Latino" model is a new one for the Rockville-based company.
The Mayorga Coffee that opened Wednesday across from the Costco in the Westfield Wheaton mall is far from a Starbucks look-alike. There's no seating, and you won't find lattes or cappuccinos on the menu. Instead of croissants or muffins, you can order empanadas, flan or Cuban pastries called pastelitos. "Some people might be shocked, but it's more in line with the coffee culture that we know," said Martin Mayorga, president and founder of Mayorga Coffee. What the Rockville-based chain is doing in Wheaton is a test model for a walk-up coffee and pastry shop, he said. He calls it "Mayorga Café Latino." "It's a big risk," Mayorga said, but he's confident that it will turn out well. The construction issues that delayed Costco's originally …

The membership warehouse store opened to a flood of customers at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday in the Westfield Wheaton mall.
After a delay of almost six months, the Wheaton Costco is open for business. Pat Fahey, the warehouse store's general manager, cut the ribbon at the entrance at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, and a line of shoppers began streaming into the store, located in the old Hecht's location at the Westfield Wheaton mall. County Executive Isiah Leggett, whose office had announced that he would be cutting the ribbon, arrived shortly before 8 a.m. and the ribbon-cutting was re-enacted, holding up more shoppers who appeared impatient to get inside the store. Fahey said he decided to cut the ribbon earlier because "we have members who are waiting to shop." Montgomery County Councilmember George Leventhal (D-At large) also came to the Costco opening. I love empanadas! I'll check it out today. Pollo Camparo, also in Wheaton, has some good ones, especially the citrus chicken. They're on Georgia Avenue between Blue Ridge Avenue and University Blvd, and are a Guatemalan chain. I don't know if they're "quality" or not, but they are tasty. And I like their fried chicken better than that at KFC.   more ›
