A suspect in a bank robbery earlier this year was discovered in a barbershop.
In January, Montgomery County police arrested a man shortly after he allegedly robbed the Capitol One Bank on Georgia Avenue in Wheaton and fled from the bank in a taxi cab. Last week, the police officer who made the arrest was honored at the Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce 29th Annual Community Awards Banquet at Hollywood East in Wheaton. Officer Andrew Suh received the 4th District Police Public Safety Award. Commander John Damskey told the story to those at the banquet of how Suh had driven around the area, seen the cab outside a barbershop and went inside, where he found the robbery suspect sitting in a barber chair covered in red paint from the dye pack that had exploded on him as he fled from the bank. The Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce will honor outstanding community members, students, educators, public safety personnel, businesses and others at its 29th annual awards banquet on April 24. The banquet will take place from 6-9 p.m. at Hollywood East in Wheaton. Last year's banquet celebrated Brookside Gardens and its more than 40 years of service and contributions to the community. The Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce and the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad are collecting toys for children who otherwise might not receive any this holiday season. The Angels for Children Toy Drive, which is in its 14th year, will officially launch Wednesday evening at the chamber's holiday mixer at The Limerick Pub in Wheaton. The toy drive organizers are asking for gifts, money, and gift wrap (paper and tape). The Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce is running its Holiday on Duty program again this year.
It may be a holiday for you and your family this Thursday (unless you work at Target), but many police, firefighters and other public safety personnel stay on duty--ready to respond to emergencies in Wheaton and Kensington. For more than a decade, the Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce has provided meals to emergency responders on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. This Thursday, food will go to Montgomery County police, the Kensington Volunteer Fire Department and the Wheaton Volunteer Rescue Squad. At the Sept. 27 mixer there will also be a presentation about the U.S. economic census, which is how the federal government gauges the health and development of American businesses.
The Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce's next breakfast mixer on Sept. 27 will have a state senator as a guest speaker. Sen. Rich Madaleno (D-Dist. 18) will speak about initiatives that will be on the ballot in November, as well as his plans for the Maryland legislative session in January. Nesreen Khashan of the Washington D.C. Metropolitan and MD Bureau of the Census will also give a presentation about the economic census, which the federal government conducts every five years. Businesses are legally required to respond if they receive an economic census form. Forms will be mailed out starting in October through December, and responses are due Feb. 12, 2013, according to the U.S. Census Bureau website. The mixer will take place on …

Meals on Wheels of Wheaton celebrates 40 years with distinction.
The Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce named Meals on Wheels of Wheaton the Non-Profit of the Year at its annual Community Awards Banquet on Wednesday. Founded in 1972, the organization packages well-balanced hot and cold meals and delivers them to the elderly community so that they can continue to live independently in their own homes. President Mary O’Brien has been with Meals on Wheels for roughly 12 years and said she was thrilled to have her team members recognized for their dedication and to accept the honor on their behalf. If you looked into the event, you would see that you have to buy tickets to this event so I highly doubt that the much of this is being funded by the city if at all. Just from the website I can see that the tickets are $35-45 a person for a dinner and any awards given to student award winners are all gift certificates from sponsoring local businesses.
