Wheaton Alum Pat Lazear Finishing Strong at West Virginia

Lazear is fighting back from an injury and looking for NFL interest.

Not surprisingly, West Virginia linebacker Pat Lazear entered his senior football season with large expectations. The Bethesda native and 2007 Wheaton graduate was a second-team All-Big East performer last year and was looking forward to further progressing his game in 2010. "I came into this year wanting to be the best dude on the field," Lazear said. "Even despite the success, I didn't feel like my first three years at West Virginia were what they should've been, and I wanted to use this year to prove that I can dominate people like I know that I can." But just two weeks before the start of the season, Lazear's goals abruptly changed. Instead of focusing on fulfilling those vast expectations, Lazear became determined just to get back …

Looking Back: Northwood Football 2010

Northwood AD Marco Fuggitti gives his opinion on this year's football season.

The Northwood football team finished 4-6 this season, good enough for fifth in the Montgomery 3A division. The Gladiators began 0-3 with losses to Watkins Mill, Clarksburg and Rockville. After the slow start, Northwood finished 4-3 over their final seven games, but still missed the playoffs. The final game of the season, the Battle of the Boulevard against the Montgomery Blair Blazers, ended in a loss for Northwood. Had they won, they would have secured a .500 season. See below for Northwood Athletic Director Marco Fuggitti's thoughts on the season. On the poor start: "The beginning of the season was  a little bit of a struggle because we didn't score our first point until our third game." On the strong finish: "We were just trying to …

Wheaton Football Team One Win Away from .500 Goal

The Wheaton football team set a goal three weeks ago of reaching .500 by the season's end, and is now just one win away from doing just that.

Wheaton coach Joe Ortega is looking for continued progression. Since taking over as the Knights' head coach last year, Ortega has helped to change the culture of Wheaton's program which had fallen on hard times in recent years. After the Knights won just two total games over the previous two years before his arrival, Ortega has led Wheaton to eight wins the last two years and has his team (4-5) on the brink of its first .500 finish since 2006. The Knights haven't made the playoffs since 1996. They close out their regular season at Einstein Friday. "[Finishing .500] would really keep the excitement up," Ortega said. "We haven't had a lot of excitement at Wheaton, but another win would give us one more than last year and just shows continued…

Rayshawn Taylor Threatens Records as Wheaton Tries to Right the Ship

Wheaton football star Rayshawn Taylor is a jack of all trades for the Knights.

Wheaton senior tailback Rayshawn Taylor is enjoying a stellar season on the gridiron this year, despite his team's less-than-spectacular start. Due to the fact that Taylor plays for a struggling team, he may not receive the notoriety that others with his production have garnered. However, if he continues to put up gaudy numbers, it is hard to fathom that he will continue to go unnoticed. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound dynamo rushed for 182 yards on 26 carries and scored two touchdowns in the Knights' loss to B-CC in this year's season opener. The following week, Taylor rushed for 143 yards on 20 carries in a loss to Woodrow Wilson, a D.C. public school. In week three, Taylor had a career performance in Wheaton's 43-42 loss to Blair. The two-year …

Wheaton Celebrates Homecoming With a Victory

Wheaton earned its first win of the year, beating Kennedy 38-0 on Friday.

A week after falling short in a bid to pick up its first victory in a one-point loss at Blair, the Wheaton High School football team wasn't about to have its homecoming spoiled by a similar letdown. The Knights scored early and never looked back, tallying touchdowns on their first four possessions as they cruised to a 38-0 victory over Kennedy on Friday. Senior Rayshawn Taylor ran for 168 yards and four touchdowns to lead Wheaton (1-3), which racked up 254 yards on the ground. "We really needed a win," said Taylor, who carried the ball 18 times. "It was our homecoming, and we had all the momentum. I talked to my line, I said, 'Line, you're going to have to [step up] tonight.'" It took the Knights just five plays to find the end zone, as …
