Construction work on trails and pathways in Wheaton Regional Park is underway and will continue through May 15, according to Montgomery Parks. The Wheaton train and carousel, the playground, and picnic shelters A, B, C and H will remain open during construction. Picnic shelters D, E, F and G will be closed during construction. Restrooms are also expected to be closed during the week of April 8 until April 15 while water pipes are replaced. Port-a-johns will be available for park visitor use during this time, according to Montgomery Parks.

The train and carousel will be open during the Montgomery County Public Schools spring break.
Spring is just around the corner! Beginning March 23, the Wheaton Miniature Train and the Ovid Hazen Wells Carousel will be open every day at Wheaton Regional Park during the MCPS spring break, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. After April 2 though, the train and carousel will be open only on Saturdays and Sundays until May 1. Montgomery Parks will hold an open house on March 17.
Soccer teams have a new place to play in Wheaton Regional Park. The new Wheaton Sports Pavilion, a covered synthetic turf field located at 11751 Orebaugh Avenue, opens to the public on Sunday. Montgomery Parks has organized an open house from 1-3 p.m. with games and drills with local soccer teams, a scrimmage at 2 p.m., giveaways, door prizes and refreshments. The sports pavilion, with its 200-by-85 feet field, takes the place of the park's original outdoor ice rink. Skaters can still use the indoor Wheaton Ice Arena next door. Groups can rent the sports pavilion to play soccer, lacrosse and Futsal (a five-a-side version of soccer played on basketball-sized courts). See the Montgomery Parks website for rental rates.

Residents report more use of space, but remain apprehensive about upkeep
Montgomery County’s decision to stop charging for use of the county’s dog parks has satisfied some frequent users of the dog park at Wheaton Regional Park, while others expressed concern that the lack of funding would result in poorer facilities. In December, the county Department of Parks announced that it would stop collecting a $40 permit fee for use of the county’s five dog parks. Rides on the Halloween-themed train and carousel have been canceled for the rest of the season.
Hurricane Sandy brought an untimely end to the Halloween-themed train and carousel at Wheaton Regional Park. Due to damage from the storm, rides on the 'Haunted Train' and 'Creepy Carousel' have been canceled for the rest of the season, according to an update on the Wheaton Train and Carousel Facebook page. Anyone who had booked train rides for Tuesday or Wednesday should have their money returned to their ParkPASS account, according to the Facebook update. There have been no injuries involving the public in 16 years of the managed hunts, according to Bill Hamilton, a Montgomery Parks wildlife ecologist.
Montgomery Parks will begin its deer management operations with managed hunts and park police sharpshooters at 25 parks around the county beginning Oct. 22, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission announced. The hunts will include specially trained Maryland-National Capital Park Police and pre-screened hunters selected by lottery. Managed hunts will continue through Jan. 26. Sharpshooting operations at places like Wheaton Regional Park will be conducted when parks are closed during evening and overnight hours, from 5:30 p.m. to sunrise daily between Jan. 1 and March 31. Starting this weekend, the train and carousel at Wheaton Regional Park will undergo their usual October transformation.
This Saturday at Wheaton Regional Park, the miniature train becomes a haunted train, and the historic Ovid Hazen Wells Carousel becomes a creepy carousel. The train and carousel will operate from 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 6 -7, 11-14, 18-21, and 25 - 31. Montgomery Parks recommends checking Facebook before planning a trip in case the attractions have been closed due to bad weather. Volunteers are needed to dress up in scary costumes and lurk along the haunted train route to frighten passengers. And yes--you can actually earn SSL hours for doing this. If you're planning to spend Labor Day weekend at Wheaton Regional Park, keep in mind that these areas will be closed all or part of the time: Wheaton Tennis will be open Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., but will be closed on Monday. Wheaton Ice Arena will be closed all weekend. Brookside Nature Center will be closed on Labor Day. Wheaton Train & Carousel will be open all weekend, including Labor Day, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The most important thing about having some type of membership (permit) is requiring a dog license, which is proof of rabies shots. Otherwise, no one knows if a dog could be in there with rabies! Also, a certain code of conduct or rules must be adhered to. I regret that I was remiss in bringing these points up at the time of the interview. more ›
