Get Out: Taste of Wheaton, Yard Sale, Animal Sanctuary Run

Check out our weekend picks for activities and events in and around Wheaton.

Here are some suggestions for fun activities for the weekend of May 19-20: The Taste of Wheaton Festival is Wheaton's biggest annual event, attracting people from all over Montgomery County and beyond to sample the food sold in small "tastes" by Wheaton's eclectic range of restaurants. Area nonprofits and local businesses (including Wheaton Patch!) will set up booths and give away freebies. Come and enjoy the live music, and be sure to bring the kids. Wheaton Regional Park's Train and Carousel Open Saturday

The train and carousel will be open during the Montgomery County Public Schools' spring break.

Beginning March 31, the Wheaton Miniature Train and the Ovid Hazen Wells Carousel will be open every day at Wheaton Regional Park during the MCPS spring break, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. After April 8 though, the train and carousel will be open only on Saturdays and Sundays until May 1. White Knuckle Parenting: Wheaton Regional Playground—Terrific or Terrifying?

My family finally got a chance to check out Wheaton Regional's renovated playground. My kids had a blast. I had a panic attack.

  Let's talk about Wheaton Regional Park, shall we? Now, I know that the renovated playground over there opened at the end of September, but I didn't get a chance to visit with my kids until a couple of weeks ago.  The first thing I want to say is that my kids had a blast. There are giant slides, a climbing mound, swings, a climbing web, plentiful sand, and more than enough playground equipment to keep my three children happy for hours.  I, on the other hand, nearly had a panic attack. The playground seemed intentionally designed to help kids escape from their parents. For instance, there is a giant, fenced, raised boardwalk bisecting the playground. I am so disappointed in the new Wheaton park. I think the whole thing was designed to get the kids to break a sweat while they're at the park, which is why they have to walk a quarter of a mile every time they want to go down the slides.
