New Details Released for Taste of Wheaton

Select exhibitor booths will be part of the annual festival.

New details have emerged this week regarding exhibitor booths at the 18th annual Taste of Wheaton festival, which is scheduled for Sunday, June 9, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Taste of Wheaton traditionally highlights the diverse restaurants in the Wheaton area, which set up booths to sell "tastes" in the $1 to $5 price range. In years past, the festival has also allowed local businesses, county organizations and non-profits to set up exhibitor booths with posters, brochures and sign-up sheets. Sidney Cooper, the festival coordinator and the marketing and events manager for the Wheaton Urban District, sent out an email in April to more than 40 of these groups: "Due to a few additional activities being planned for the event, which will …

Taste of Wheaton: No Exhibitor Booths This Year

Find out what will be taking their place.

The Taste of Wheaton, an annual street festival featuring local restaurants selling low-cost "tastes" of their food, will not have room for any exhibitor booths this year, according to Sidney Cooper, the marketing and events manager for the Wheaton Urban District. In years past, the exhibitor booths have been an opportunity for local businesses, civic associations, non-profits and other organizations to share information about themselves with the community. So, what is taking the place of the booths this year? "We will add a cooking demonstration tent featuring chefs from local restaurants and also have a food & wine tent featuring local farmers/artisans along with cheeses, meats, etc from the newly opened Costco," Cooper wrote in an email…

The Taste of Wheaton is now on the calendar at Wheatonmd.org (http://www.wheatonmd.org/events/item/taste-of-wheaton1). I met with Ana L. van Balen, the Mid-County Regional Service Director, about a week ago to discuss the exclusion of civic booths from the event in 2013. She stated [paraphrasing] that "civic booths are not being excluded from the event", but that they are "adding new things", …   more ›

Wheaton Clean and Safe Team Prepares for Snow

Wheaton Urban District workers loaded salt and sand Tuesday.

The Wheaton Urban District's Clean and Safe Team was in "prep mode" Tuesday, according to Joe Callaway, chief of operations. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Montgomery County for midnight Wednesday through 3 a.m. Thursday. Forecasters are predicting 6 inches to a foot of snow. "The staff is prepared for a long day or two and prepared to stay overnight," Callaway wrote in an email to Patch. On Tuesday, the team loaded salt and sand, fueled trucks and snow blowers and attached plows. Callaway said the team will focus on bus stops and curb cuts, the ramps connecting sidewalks to the street surface. The team will also clear a snow blower's width on the public sidewalks if needed, he said. For emergency phone …

Wheaton Spotlight: Clean and Safe Team Hotline

Find out how the ways in which the Clean and Safe Team can help you.

If you've driven through or walked around Wheaton's Urban District, you've probably seen the red shirts of the Clean and Safe Team. Team members maintain landscaping, clear away litter, provide directions for visitors, and more in Wheaton's downtown area. Patch asked Joe Callaway, the Wheaton Urban District's chief operations officer, to share something about what the team does that residents and visitors might not know about. His answer? The Clean and Safe Team hotline: 240-777-8120. A superviser is always available to answer calls, Callaway wrote in an email to Patch. Visitors to Wheaton can ask for assistance by calling the hotline at the following hours: Callaway said the highest number of requests are for jump starts, assistance …

Reedie Drive Construction Should Finish By Christmas

Montgomery County's Department of Transportation aims to improve pedestrian safety with the streetscaping project.

Have you noticed all the construction work along Reedie Drive between Georgia Avenue and Veirs Mill Road in downtown Wheaton? Montgomery County's Department of Transportation is trying to improve pedestrian safety with concrete medians and islands and with marked crosswalks, according to a report from the Wheaton Redevelopment Program. Sidewalks on that stretch of road are also getting a new look. Joe Callaway, chief of operations for the Wheaton Urban District, wrote in an email to Patch that the streetscaping project began the second week of November and the construction phase should be completed by Christmas. Landscaping will most likely be delayed until the spring, he added.

Is IHOP a Local Restaurant?

IHOP owner was upset not to be included at Sunday’s World of Montgomery Festival.

If you were looking for food at the World of Montgomery Festival on October 16, you might have seen vendors for local favorites such as The Limerick Pub, Ghar-E-Kabob and Saigonese Restaurant—even a funnel cake stand. But you would not have seen the IHOP. "We would have been happy to participate if asked,” said William Moore, who owns the IHOP at the corner of University Boulevard and Grandview Avenue. “I assume they’re trying to promote the independent mom-and-pops.” The Wheaton Urban District coordinated the booths at Sunday’s festival, collected the $125 fee from food vendors and sent out event notices to businesses, said Sidney Cooper, of the Wheaton Urban District. “We were very selective for the food vendors,” Cooper said. “We …
