Republican challenger Ken Timmerman took on incumbent U.S. Rep. Christopher Van Hollen.

Update, 12:43 a.m.: Montgomery County Democrats cheered the victories of Van Hollen and President Barack Obama at a watch party in Rockville Tuesday evening. "My enthusiasm for Barack Obama and for Chris Van Hollen drew me out tonight," said Chevy Chase democrat Mary McMahon. "I'm absolutely ecstatic about our victories." Van Hollen told Patch he was working to get to know his new constituents in the newly re-drawn District 8, meeting with business owners, farmers and students in Carroll and Frederick counties. "I'm looking forward to representing all the people of District 8," Van Hollen said. As election returns rolled in, Democrats clapped and hugged amidst chants of "four more years." Obama-Romney Final Presidential Debate: Who Won?

The third presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney focused on foreign policy. Who dominated? We want to know what Maryland thinks.

After President Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney sparred aggressively last week, the candidates dug into foreign policy at Monday night's third and final presidential debate. News organizations cited instant polls that showed voters believed both candidates did well in a face-off that was less contentious than past debates this season but offered up a few verbal highlights. The two candidates had extensive exchanges on Iran and Syria, and the importance of the U.S.-Israel alliance. Obama responded to a charge by Romney that the Navy had fewer ships than it did in 1916. “We also have fewer horses and bayonets,” said Obama. Whom do you think won the debate? Tell us in comments. -- TV Channels Broadcasting Live: ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, CNN, …

SPEAK OUT: What Shade of Blue is Maryland?

And, where does Montgomery County fit in?

The campaign season brings out the best, the worst, the most passionate and sometimes the most vitriolic political debate. It also brings out candidates making stump speeches. In Maryland, those candidates are seldom running for president. A Republican presidential candidate hasn’t claimed Maryland since George H.W. Bush in 1988. It’s been a decade since Robert L. Ehrlich became the first Republican governor elected in Maryland since Spiro Agnew was elected 35 years earlier. The numbers tell a familiar tale: The roughly two-to-one voter registration advantage that Democrats hold over Republicans. The six-to-two Democrat-to-Republican advantage in congressional seats. And yet, when you read the comments on Patch sites, you hear them: …

Funny, we're listed anywhere from 6 to 9th in the nation for schools, while test scores have dropped 3 out of the last 5 years. We are listed as 39th as a business friendly state, so I really don't know where you pulled your number from. 5 of the top cities? where was that pulled, please tell me, was it for scenery or crabs? We certainly can throw money at the education problem with falling test …   more ›

Presidential race: President Barack Obama: Maryland is a reliably Democratic state for presidential candidates. SPEAK OUT: Best Speaker of Wednesday’s DNC’s Lineup?

Former President Bill Clinton headlined a list of speakers.

Riemer: Clinton Will 'Light This Place on Fire'

Montgomery County Councilmember and DNC regular Hans Riemer is in Charlotte this week.

Montgomery County Councilmember Hans Riemer is in Charlotte this week for the Democratic National Convention. This is the Silver Spring resident's fifth DNC, and he was fired up to hear Bill Clinton speak. Patch spoke to him on the street on Wednesday, which happened to be his 40th birthday. How are you celebrating your birthday? My wife's here, and first we’re going to watch Bill Clinton speak, and I think Bill Clinton is going to light this place on fire. I’ve been going to conventions since 1996. There's something about his moment in time and Bill Clinton’s way to explain our economic troubles. It’s a perfect moment for him to speak to the country. When he gets up there, it's just going to crystallize a lot of the issues in this …
