One of my very favorite things about the last day of school is going through my kids' backpacks and seeing everything their teachers send home.… Here is some of what I found this year.
I *love* finally getting to go through the composition notebooks and reading what my children have…Read More written over the course of the year. One of my favorites from this year's batch, in an essay R wrote about the potential perils of global warming: "The Mississippi River may dry out, preventing deliveries. Also, flesh-eating fungi will appear more often."
And how did we even know if there was a warning? unless you have a smart phone or you were watching…Read More TV, you were not informed of the tornado WARNING (not watch). As an experienced survivor of tornados from the mid-west (Kansas) residents should know that the county is putting them at risk by not having a highly audible outside siren alarm system. If you listened to the interviews from Oklahoma, these sirens saved lives. I have asked the county many times why they don't use sirens...I get different responses, but all add up to - it's fine the way it is.
So, if you work outside, don't have tech phones, don't watch tv, you are out of luck.
Oh, and if you have hearing challenges, too bad...per your county government.
We've been going to 8407 since they opened. While the restaurant is decided more upscale than most…Read More in downtown SS, the staff have always been the most welcoming and cheery to families with small children. It's really one of our favorite places for a more refined brunch in all of the DC area. Because dinner for two - a date night? - can tend to get a bit pricey when adding appetizers and wine, we make those more infrequently (than brunch) but the intimate atmosphere of the dining room lends itself to such occasions.
I DON'T like the new look -- too much advertising and harder to navigate. I will visit Patch much…Read More less as a result. But I realize that I am speaking with a two-edged tongue, as I know you need ad revenue to keep this going and I wouldn't pay for it as I don't pay for any news site on the web.
The intersection of Georgia and Spring is a good example of a miserable crossing area. The walk…Read More lights come on as traffic in the turn lanes gets the green light so they're turning right into pedestrians entering the crosswalk. The actual walk signals are not long enough to get across 4 lanes of traffic.
I think that both drivers and pedestrians should be targeted. I can't tell you how many times I've watched people jaywalk across 2nd Street (Wayne Ave) right in front of the Courthouse, with police officers right there waiting to go to Court. It's shameful and indicative of how little pedestrians respect traffic rules.
I thought that most of the problems are speed limit. I am a fast driver but I recognize that…Read More speeding cameras slowed the traffic on Connecticut avenue... and it paces the traffic to a steady one instead of a stop and go... the police should focus on WHAT drivers or pedestrian ARE DOING while they do not pay attention on the road... I would say NO TEXTING would be the first step for drivers and even walkers because they do not look at where they are going.
As someone who walks and jogs through Wheaton, I've come to one conclusion I'm certain of: drivers…Read More on Georgia Avenue wishing to make left turns (let's say onto Reedie, but really pick any intersection) are only concerned with one thing and that is beating any on-coming traffic. Pedestrians possibly crossing, with the right of way, play no factor in most drivers' decisions to not gun it and make the left as soon as they can.
I was confused after seeing the run-off features installed earlier this year, but seeing them in…Read More action during that last few down-pours really has convinced me. They are a great idea, to mitigate hardscape runoff.
One thing the creek needs is stream bed management -- the large Tulip, Oak and other tall trees along the banks fall with alarming regularity. Adjusting the banks with rip-rap or perhaps introducing beavers into the park would help mitigate the loss of big trees, erosion, and other negative impacts from high-water action. Birds and other wildlife rely on the trees, and for bees, the Tulips are the primary source of nectar during spring honey making time. We need the fresh air and other benefits these tall, stately trees bring.
Sligo Creek Park is, after all, a park, not a wilderness setting. Managing the park means upkeep.
I searched and found your facebook page that seems to show the exact farmer's market location. Was…Read More going to ask, but will just post the info here for the benefit of others.
Wheaton Farmers Market
2425 Reedie Drive
Wheaton, Maryland 20902
In addition to the free parking mentioned above, this location is in "Wheaton Triangle" only steps away from the Wheaton Metro station.
Thanks for the memories of our favorite park, Hershey Park in Hershey, PA. The old wooden roller…Read More coaster was also our very favorite. There was also another favorite, much tamer Love Boat ride that went through a dark tunnel and then went up an incline and you got wet at the end of the ride. Visiting the Hershey Chocolate Factory was also a must on our trip to Hershey. We grew up in nearby York, PA.
Going to Hershey Park had been a yearly event when we took our own three children to Hershey Park.…Read More They loved it there, too. All three of our children are now married and have taken their children to Hershey Park. We have also been to Hershey, PA to the famous Hershey Car Show, where we purchased a 1994 Chrysler LeBaron convertible. I enjoyed reading your article.
Cori, you have no idea how much this helps. I just found out some of the details about the Geo Bowl…Read More and it sounds like a much better situation for my kiddo than I was originally imagining. I'm going to reach out to the team tonight. I imagine that they will be receptive to my worries. I'm hoping that all of the worst case scenarios are in my head and only in my head, which is probably likely. :) Maybe I'll see you at the Geo Bowl!
Priming is key. You can also show him video on similar bowls. Pretend at home with family after…Read More finding out more or less how it will go the day of event. Encourage and prime/prep. How wonderful that he has come so far!
Yes and yes to everything you say here.
The reality of parenthood is simultaneously far far worse…Read More and far far better than the fantasy could possibly be.
The truth about living with multiple pairs of giant stinky man shoes should be enough to make most of us think twice about filling our houses with male offspring.
And when did I sign up to help a hormonal 15 yr old write an impossible essay on a book he's not yet read, due in 3 days?
It's lucky we love them so much is all I can say.
