County Finishes Pedestrian Safety Work On Reedie Drive

The project is part of Montgomery County's Pedestrian Safety Initiative.

A major pedestrian safety project in Wheaton wrapped up Monday, and Reedie Drive has a whole new look—one that county officials hope will lead to fewer accidents.

The county designated this 800-foot stretch of road between Georgia Avenue and Veirs Mill Road as a "High Incidence Area" due to 20 pedestrian collisions (including one fatality) between Jan. 1, 2004, and Dec. 31, 2012.

Some of the engineering improvements along Reedie Drive include high-visibility crosswalks, a new traffic island at Grandview Avenue, a barrier median and a raised planter along the south side of the road near Georgia Avenue.

The project is part of the county's Pedestrian Safety Initiative, established in 2007.

In the video above, County Executive Isiah Leggett explains why current and anticipated development in Wheaton makes pedestrian safety improvements in the area even more essential.
