Wheaton Then and Now: Georgia and University

Looking at Wheaton's past, where Georgia Avenue was the ICC of its day.

Have you ever head of the 7th Street Pike?

That’s what Georgia Avenue was called in 1848.  Georgia Avenue had various names between 1848 and 1913.  Over the years, it has been called Westchester Road, Union Turnpike and Brookville Road.

In 1913, it was changed to Georgia Avenue and became a two lane road that had toll gates, after being paved with asphalt.

The photo above shows the intersection of Georgia with another state road, University, in 1947. Familiar sites include the Wheaton Inn (which became the Anchor Inn), and the Hickerson General Store - now Samantha’s Bakery and Diner), and Elbe’s Market.
