Wheaton HS Advances to State Soccer Quarter Finals

The Wheaton High School Boys Soccer team (10-2-2) defeated the Northwood Gladiators (3-10-1) on Thursday, October 31st winning a close battle 3-2. Previously the Knights had beaten Northwood decisively on October 9th, 6-0.  The rain soaked evening would prove to be tougher for the Knights against their rival with everything on the line for both teams.  The Knights managed to win on the foot of Senior Angelo Marques who scored all 3 goals for the Knights. The Knights got on the board first when a shot was initially taken by Senior Heyner Pajaro from just inside the 18 box.  Northwood Goalie Senior Edwin Machuca made the initial stop but bobbled the ball.  Marques swooped in and popped the ball into the net.  Minutes later the Gladiators came back when Senior Elecio Benitez took a free kick from the 20 yard mark on the far wing.  The shot arched and curved to the far post taking Knights Goalie Oskar Amaguana by surprise.  The ball went in untouched to tie the game.  As time in the half was running Marquez was fed a ball up the middle from Junior Ian Dey.  Marquez fired on the run and got the ball passed the diving Gladiator goalie to take the halftime lead.  Northwood answered the Knights 10 minutes into the half when Sophomore Hector Problete crossed a ball in front of the net from the edge of the box.  Senior Andrew Ferman was in position at dead center in front of the goal and "one touched" the ball into the net.   The game now tied 2-2, tensions rose and yellow cards were being issued frequently.  The Knights broke the tension at the 21:14 mark when Junior Rafeal Ferriera fed Marquez just passed the midfield line on the left side of the goal.  Marquez beat the defender and ripped a shot passed the goalie for the game winner. Goalie Oskar Amaguana made 6 saves on the night holding off the Gladiators. The Boys advance to the Maryland State 3A Quarter Final against Urbana HS which will be played at Oakdale High School, Tuesday, November 5th at 8pm.
