Pet Cemetery in Aspen Hill Competes for Historic Preservation Funds

The Kennel at Aspin Hill Memorial Park in Montgomery County is thought to be the second oldest cemetery of its kind.

The grave site of some 50,000 animals is in the running for a $1 million historical preservation grant. Currently in ninth place with 151,650 points, The Kennel at Aspin Hill Memorial Park, located at Georgia Avenue and Aspen Hill Road, is thought to be the second oldest cemetery of its kind. ("Aspin" is not a typo. The park is spelled differently than the neighborhood of Aspen Hill.)

The contest, Partners in Preservation, is a product of American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Twenty-four historic sites in DC, Maryland and Virginia, including the Synagogue at Sixth and I and Washington National Cathedral, are competing for the money, which will be granted to the site with the most votes. The voting ends on May 10.

Built in 1920, the kennel would become an educational center for Montgomery County Humane Society if they win the grant.
