UPDATE: University Boulevard Reopens; Water Restored

An early water main break Saturday has been repaired and water restored to the area.

Update, 8:30 p.m.: Westbound University Boulevard West between Amherst Avenue and Elkin Street has reopened following a water main break that occurred shortly before 6 a.m., according to WSSC spokesperson Kimberley M. Knox.

Update, 6:37 p.m.: WSSC reports that the water has been turned back on and the repair on the water main break complete.

WSSC crews are now focused on repairing the roadway following an early morning water main break in the 2200 block of University Boulevard West.

Kimberly M. Knox, a WSSC spokesperson, said that the road between Amherst Avenue and Elkin Street will reopen later this evening.

Update, 4:49 p.m.: WSSC anticipates the water will be turned back on and westbound University Boulevard West between Amherst Avenue and Elkin Street reopened by mid-evening, according to Kimberly M. Knox, WSSC spokesperson.

Update, 3:45 p.m.: WSSC crews remain on the scene of a water main break in the 2200 block of University Boulevard West in Wheaton.

"There was a split in a 10-foot section of pipe, so they'll have to replace the pipe," said Kimberly M. Knox, a WSSC spokesperson. "There is no estimated time that the repairs will be completed and the water turned back on."

Knox said that jugs of water have been delivered to the 43 impacted accounts [customers].

Patch was on the scene at 3:45 p.m., and the workers were in good spirits despite the region's blistering record heat.

Westbound University Boulevard West remains closed from Amherst Avenue to Elkin Street.

Original post, 1:18 p.m.: Westbound University Boulevard West in Wheaton is closed from Amherst Avenue to Elkin Street due to a 14-inch water main break, according to Kimberley M. Knox, a WSSC spokesperson. 

Currently, there is not an estimated time when the repairs will be made and the road will be reopened, Knox said. The break—in a section of pipe dating from 1936—at 2204 University Boulevard West was first reported just before 6 a.m.

Know said that 43 customers are without water due to the break. WSSC crews are working to repair the pipe to restore water service and then will repair the road.
