Parents' Hang-Out Spots

Hundreds, thousands of parents are dropping kids off at practice, lessons, rehearsals every night. Where do those parents go during the waiting time?

While my daughter was in her hour-and-a-half long chorus rehearsal, I figured I’d find a quiet corner in the school and catch up on some things, maybe do some reading.  I had my computer, my cup of coffee, I was all set.  After getting the kids checked-in, the parents were told that we actually couldn’t stay in the building for all kinds of reasons – security being one of them.  There was a universal “ugh” as the parents, chatting with others they recognized from some other kid-activity, also laden with a variety of books, laptops, coffee cups, headphones, and small children, obviously had the same thought I did.  Where are we going to go at 7 o’clock at night, on Valentine’s, at that?

If my computer battery wasn’t dead, I probably would have stayed in my car rather than deal with downtown Silver Spring parking and the inevitable crowd.  Whole Foods seemed like a good, non-crowded option – I could pick up some groceries, drink my coffee, and read – and get a parking spot.  Pulling into the lot, I noticed a sign for a nearby wine shop and cafe.  Though I've seen the sign for years, I’d never been in there and was sure that it would be crowded, but what else did I have to do?  There wasn't too much of a line so I browsed the shelves, picked up a 4-pack of hard cider, ordered some food, and found a kind of, not too much in the way seat at the counter.

It seems like a nice little spot, with a good selection of wine, beer, ales, and hard ciders and a light-fare menu, sandwiches, salads, appetizers.  The service was quick enough and it was comfortable to wait out the time.  There was even a knitting group – about half a dozen people drinking, chatting, and working their needles (I might have to come back just to get some tips).

I know there are parents all over the area, dropping off kids somewhere then waiting for them when its too far or inconvenient to go home.  What do you do during that time?  Do you stay with your child or do you wander off somewhere?  And if you leave, where do you go?
