24-Year-Old Female Pedestrian Struck, Killed on Georgia Avenue

Police are investigating the collision.

A 24-year-old woman died after a car hit her as she was crossing the northbound lanes of Georgia Avenue near the intersection of Regina Drive Thursday night, police reported.

Etsegenet Abebe Hurissa of the 13200 block of Holdridge Road died at the scene of the collision, which happened around 10:38 p.m. Officers from Montgomery County Police's Fourth District and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the scene.

Police have reported that Hurissa was struck by a silver 2007 Volkswagen Eos that was traveling northbound on Georgia Avenue. After hitting her, the car left the roadway and crashed through an adjacent wooden fence. The vehicle stopped in the backyard of a nearby residence.

Police have identified the driver of the vehicle as 18-year-old Carlos Andre Arias of the 4000 block of Chesterwood Drive. He remained at the scene and then was taken to Suburban Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The front-seat passenger was identified as a 17-year-old from the Aspen Hill area of Silver Spring who was transported to Holy Cross Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the death and is seeking information about and witnesses to the collision. Witnesses are asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at (301) 840-2435. Callers may remain anonymous.
