Council Committees to Discuss Wheaton Redevelopment Friday

Councilmembers will consider where the new Park and Planning headquarters should be located and whether it should include significant office space for county agencies.

Two Montgomery County Council committees are meeting together Friday morning to discuss the redevelopment plans for Wheaton.

The Government Operations and Fiscal Planning committee and the Planning, Housing and Economic Development committee will consider proposed amendments for two projects included in the county's CIP budget: the Wheaton Redevelopment Program and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission headquarters.

The redevelopment plan that the County Council voted on last year for Wheaton featured a government office building that would house the M-NCPPC headquarters and possibly two county agencies.

But County Executive Isiah Leggett recently recommended against moving the county's departments of Environmental Protection and Permitting Services from Rockville to Wheaton, citing costs.

The proposed amendments would move the office building funds from the Wheaton Redevelopment Program to the M-NCPPC headquarters project.

The Council will also discuss whether the office building should include significant space for county agencies, and whether the office building should be constructed on Parking Lot 13 or on the other side of Reedie Drive.
