UPDATE: Wheaton Metro Station Escalator Service Outages

One working escalator has experienced multiple mechanical problems in past 24 hours

Original Post, September 13, 4:13 p.m.: Last evening, the one working exit escalator at the Wheaton Metro station was inoperable from 7:20 p.m. through the station's closing, due to mechanical problems.

WMATA crews were able to fix the problem overnight, but it experienced a 59-minute outage this morning from 7:21 a.m. until 8:20 a.m. Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said that maintenance crews are still investigating the issue and hope to have the escalator working reliably by this evening.

The other escalator is out of service as a part of WMATA's wide-ranging capital rehabilitation project, where escalators are repaired and refurbished in place.

Update, 5:35 p.m: According to Metro spokesperson Steven Tauben-Kibel, the planned modernization of the #2 escalator currently under construction as a part of the capital rehabilitation project should be completed in the next two to three weeks. Once finished, Metro will begin similar work on escalator #2, completing Metro's modernization work on the Wheaton Metro Station's escalators.
